Question

This weekend I downloaded the updated Palm Desktop Software from Handspring and installed it on my Mac (6100/66 running system 8.1).

All seemed to go well exept that, at the end of the process, the installer displayed a message that "the installation did not complete successfully". I tried installing again with exentions off and got the same results. Oddly enough, everything does seem to be updtated and to work ok, including a successful HotSync with my Visor, but I'm concerned that there may be a problem lurking in the background.

If anyone can shed any light on this, I would appreciate it.

Did you download the newest version of the Mac Palm Desktop from Handspring? If so, I think you are supposed to have a Mac OS of 9.0.4. (I have both, and so far, everything has been working well).

Yes, I downloaded the updated software from Handspring. I don't plan on using system 9.04 because my Mac is a bit old and slow but I wanted the updated Palm Desktop software.

Installation did not complete successfully

This happened for me as well. I redid the install several times to try to get it right but no luck.

But it DOES seem to work OK.

However, I am experiencing an "issue" which may be related or may not.

If my mac crashes (iMacDV400, macOS 9.04, 192MB Ram) and i have to restart with the reset button, then the Mac comes on with the date set to 1904 and all my TCP/IP settings are gone (DHCP cable modem thru roadrunner). And its hell to get it back.....

weird, huh?

This is the clasic symptom of the PRAM (Parameter RAM) being corrupted. I don't know if the iMacDV 400 has a lithium battery in it to back up the PRAM. If it does (likely) then the battery could be faulty. If the battery is bad, you will need to get it replaced, and the below info will not help.

If the battery is ok then you can try clearing the PRAM: There are two ways to clear the PRAM back to factory defaults: 1) I'm going from memory here - hold down the key combination Command-P-R when you boot/reboot the iMac. 2) Use a utility program like TechTool to clear it. There is a freeware version of TechTool available from www.micromat.com.

If this doesn't help, you can try re-installing the OS. If that doesn't work, call Apple Tech Support. Could be a bad iMac.
