2 thoughts...
1) Gee, I thought I was bad about taking things apart
2) Did it go back together ok?

I guess we've just had our first warranty invalidation....

No USB on W2K? AAARRRGGGGHHH!!! All of my machines are running W2K (beta testing for work). I knew I should have kept that Serial Cradle on my order list!

Looking at the RAM, ROM, Speaker component makes me think someone out there should be working on at least a simple speaker upgrade working iff this card. Don't know if there is space but I imagine there would be a lot of takers.

Belch/Mike:

Thanks for the various photos and for doing the work for those of us who like to tinker. I personally disassembled my Palm III this morning after noticing that the memory card seemed to get unseated (and therefore the pen input wasn't working).

Anyway, just wanted to let you and everyone else know there are some solutions to your stated complaints:

Really poor backlight
- Can be disabled using HackMaster and a choice of hacks, or there is a specific (undocumented) shortcut (s-cut then .3 or something similar) that can make the backlight behave like the Palm-III-esque backlight.

Their Plastic cover stinks
- Buy a solid leather or metal Visor case and, in the name of science :-), see how long it will take to melt the Visor's cover.

IR Port on Side
- Rather it be this way with the springboard option then top-mounted sans springboards :-)

No IR Hotsync
- Check PilotZone for a program called IRSync+ which should allow you and everybody out there to sync via IR. Don't send cyber-doody my way if it doesn't work, but I've used it on my III to sync my girlfriend's notebook port, and she says I do it the best ;-) (heh).

Buttons Repeat if held
- Trade-off of more efficient contacts. In some ways I'd prefer that, rather than having to press the memo button eight times to get from "Auto Info" to the "Yankees" memopad categories.

USB Hotsync doesn't seem to work under Windows 2000
- Seems to me Bill Gates ought to help you out with this one ;-) From what I hear from a couple of beta-testers thereof, Windows 2K doesn't currently support it, but the final version will.

Question

Okay, I'm confused. Do you mean that the plastic cover literally stinks, as in smells bad? New plastic often has a wierd smell.

My confusion arises from the fact that you said that it has a solid feel. Help?

Chris, uh, his statement that the cover stinks has nothing to do with scent.

The Visor comes with a screen cover which attaches to the top and the bottom of the unit (either protecting the screen or it can be attached on the back to be out of the way). Check the "Blue Visor Pics" thread on this board to check 'em out.

Anyway, the visor "casing" is the clear, colored or graphite body of the unit, the screen cover is the plastic thing that protects the screen and detaches from the unit.

And the lousy cover sentiment seems to be echoed by about 2/3 of the people who have occasion to try it out. I didn't hate it when I tried it, but I do happen to prefer the Palm III flip-up cover. I do like the factm tho, that the Visor cover can be attached out of the way so you don't need to keep a thumb or the stylus as a screen-cover-holder-upper. But that's me.

Wow, when will we get to see the inside of the components ?!

I just hope I don't see these parts on eBay auctioned off separately...

Weasel... I think that would be illegal. Something about not selling body parts...
