Question

I just bought a Handspring Modem Module last night (for $29!!!) from my local Staples. Unfortunately, I know nothing about modems, so I naively thought that I could follow the setup directions from the recent Handheld Computing article and get connected quickly. My problem is that my email/web access are on a university server with a modem pool that does not support PPP or Slip connections (whatever those are. ) There is a third option available in the Palm Network preferences CSLIP which does not seem to work either. Does this mean that my modem will not work with my school's modem pool? Do I need to find a different ISP?

Thanks in advance for your help. Please allow me to repeat that I know nothing about modems, networking or any of that stuff... sorry if this question is silly.

I'll try to offer whatever help I can. PPP,Slip, and CSlip are the three connection types for a Palm/Visor. If you can't get any of these to work, maybe you should try to contact either a university tech help guy or just a friend who knows a lot about computers. The Networking system on the visor is similar to that of a Win95 machine. Since I don't know anything about your university's internet system, that's about all the help I can offer. I would imagine, though, that the internet system would be compatible with the visor one way or another, but you would probably need to change the networking settings. If all else fails, try to find a cheap ISP like ATT worldnet.

how I obtained my cheap modem module

miradu2000, the modem module is the 33.6k one made by Handspring. They are on clearance. I have seen them on Amazon, but for >$30. For some reason the brick and mortar (NOT the website) Staples are selling them cheply - rung up at $29.90! The trick is finding a Staples that still has some. I got mine at the Staples in Rochester, NY, but I bought the last one (or I would offer to get you one...) There is a thread about this on the Springboard discussion board. Perhaps someone living in an non-Handspring heavy place would be willing to pick one up for you.

Sorry I can't be of more help - I think I just lucked into finding one.
