I third the eTrex to Visor setup. It's awesome!
I store all my maps on my Memplug, and with the upcoming PiDirect, I won't have to copy them over anymore! *SWEET*!

PIDirect will not work with OS3.1H

So us Visor/VDX users will have to live with moving files back and forth!

do not get a geode!

i own a geode and i can tell all of you that it is the worst 250.00 dollars i ever spent. I got it for 250 because i am on the beta team. it normally would have been almost 300.00.

anyone who buys this will know why i hate it so much.

the pictures show color topographical maps and thier software doesnt even support color let alone topo maps. The battery consumption is aweful and the sat locks take FOREVER! The MMC slots that set it apart dont even function

and to top it all off i have been trying for over a month to get my money back and Geodiscovery doesnt answer emails or thier phone.

Like i said stay away from the geode!

I'm interested in the Earthmate option - the Topo maps I've seen on the Delorme web site are spectacular. Did you but the Earthmate/Topo USA/etc seperatly or as a bundle then but the extra cable for the Visor ?

earthmate

I bought the earthmate as a refurb unit from the DeLorme website. I also bought the Solus Pro 3.0, Topo USA on DVD and Street Atlas USA on their website. The serial/modem cable was from mark space. Works like a charm on both my laptop and Prism. Fast Lock-on and the maps appear to be very up-to-date. Plus I can move snippets of maps back and forth to the Prism. I guess I won't have to do that as often if I can ever get a memplug!

Make mention of new cables

Just in case there's someone out there that hasn't heard:

www.markspace.com has 2 new cables available which directly attach a Visor Solo, Deluxe, or Prism (not Platinum or Edge) to Garmins.

In particular, the cable to connect from Visor to eTrex is referred to as DCH-GE. The one for most other Garmins is referred to as DCH-GA.

They are in fact very nice products and I use them myself. I've received favorable comments from other folks, as well.

HandyGPS

My wife bought me the HandyGPS for Christmas last year. I guess I should have learned a little more about GPS before getting it because I was disappointed by the module...partly because of the limitations of the GPS system but also because of the module's shortcomings.

Primarily I wished to use it in my car so I managed to find a windshield mount for a Visor and despite the HandyGPS's size, the VisorDx + module does fit. Because of battery life restrictions, I haven't had a chance to do a full-scale test of the springboard in my car. Now VisorCentral reports that there will be a HandyGPS Pro with an optional separate GPS antenna for vehicle use. I'm wondering if I should try to go that route and sell the old one or what.

Any suggestions from our studio audience?

HandyGPS Pro sounds good, external antenna and battery, chargers. I would wait to read the reviews first.

magellan and 3rd party software

Hi!
How can other software connect to the Magellan GPS? Usually software wants GPS to be connected via serial port, does Magellan GPS companion plugged onto the springboard slot also connected to the serial interface? Is here anyone who tried other progs (e.g. HandMap Pro) in conjunction with this GPS receiver?

Other software for the Magellan

Solus Pro 2.0 also works with the Magellan Companion in my Visor Prism now that Delorme has recently released a software update for that program. Unfortunately, after trying it out for a while, I still think that the mapping program that comes with the Magellan is an overall better program. As far as I know, these are the only two programs that work with the Magellan GPS.

I downloaded Handmap a couple of weeks ago. It has some interesting features like water landmarks but I wasn't able to get a good feel with the limited demo map of New York. It did take the input from the magellan but not very useful as I live in Arkansas. It would be good if they could include a small demo in each state. I'm not real willing right now to fork over however much for the program and $70 for the US maps. Yes you can do it in 5 county chunks to get to the $70 mark but who on earth never travels more than 20 counties......

I've had the magellan for 5 months and the only nmea compatible software that it hasn't supported is GPSlogger a freeware logging program, as a rule the magellan supports any software that is nmea compatible. About the only software that has been problematic has been Solus Pro and now a fix exists for that.

Here's some more detailed information on what adapter cable works with what GPS:

Magellan 300 series:

Generally speaking, the PDCH-M9-6 should work with just about any GPS with the PD Data cable and a Visor Solo, Deluxe, or Prism.
