I have left a number of modules in while hotsynching (ThinModem Plus, Presenter-to-Go, DataQuake 16 meg) and have had no problems. You will, however, get an error message in your hotsynch log telling you that there was a failure to synch some files. This results from some incompatibilities between the Palm OS and the SpringBoard slot. My understanding is that even though you get the error, nothing is really wrong. If you have BackupBuddy, you will not get the error.
I did notice with my ThinModem Plus that if my finger was over the plug to attach the dongle while I was placing my Platinum in the cradle, I would get a rather painful shock. It did not have any effect on the module, the handheld, or the computer. After doing it a couple of times, I made certain where my fingers were when placing the handheld in the cradle.
With regard to leaving them in all the time, I used to leave my ThinModem Plus in all of the time until I got my DataQuake. It stays in all of the time. You may see some shortening of your battery life, depending upon the module, by leaving them in all of the time. It really wasn't a big difference with either the ThinModem Plus or the DataQuake, though the ThinModem Plus seemed to use more power than the DataQuake.
