I own a Visor Delux and an 8mb flash module for it as well. I have been having a problem moving files to the flash module: I get the following message:
"Since [file name] cannot be edited while on the module, we recommend that you copy it instead. Moving it may cause its associated application to crash. Move it anyway?"

I understand that you can only launch applications from the flash module that cannot be altered but some of the applications I'd like to add cannot be altered (text files) and I still get the message. I am getting frustrated. Is there a good web page or something that goes through all of this. It's a basic question, but one I really need to figure out!!

Post standard message

That message always comes up when you "move" a file. I just ignore it. (I don't have any applications on my modules, except Peanut Reader - mine are filled with data.)

So as long as I put files that I will absolutely NOT modify in any way, shape, or form, it's okay? ie, if it's a book that is read by a reader (which I imagine should be stored on the handspring's main memory), you can't bookmark or anything. I especially have in mind medical software (5 minute clinical consult and lexidrugs) which I don't believe are modifiable. does the system crash if I do modify anything?

My only experience with document readers and the 8mb Module is "Documents To Go", and "Peanut Reader". (FREE @ http://www.peanutpress.com) DTG will not let you add bookmarks, etc., to files on the module, but PR will. PR creates a tiny (usually ~1k) file for each file it opens - on the Visor. This is where it stores info, like where you last left off, bookmarks, screen orientation, etc.

Modify files: When I change a document on my laptop, I sync it to my Visor, then move it to the module, answering Yes to the overwrite prompt. [If the file was something that I could modify on the Visor, instead of my laptop, I would move (or copy) it to the Visor, make changes, then move it back.]

I have never had anything crash on me because I tried to modify something on the module. (DTG - bookmarks) It just pretended to accept the command, then ignored it.

Of course, you should always make a current backup before installing any new software. Do you also have the Backup Module?

This is a bit off-subject, but Peanut Reader will read DOC files, and if you have a text (or MS Word) document that you want to convert to the PR format, they have a "Make Book" program that's available. (it's free too) This way, instead of having just plain text (most DOC files) you can add bold, italics, underlines, tabs, centered text, page breaks, and chapter titles to your documents.

I just found out the hard way that you can't put FontHack 123's various font files on the module. My Visor crashed; I moved the fonts back to RAM; crashing continued. I think the move corrupted the fonts or something. I deleted the fonts and reloaded them, and all's well now.

By the way, File Mover will warn you if you try to move documents or images (and FontHack fonts, and probably many other types of .pdb files) to the module. I have CSpotRun and a bunch of documents on my module with no problem; iSilo Free has no problem reading from the module either. Neither of these readers allows modification of document files, though.

Currently I am using these programs off my module with no problems:
domino!
Album To Go
Bible Reader
Block Party
Checkers
Eggyland
Face Painter
Haiopeis
Hardball
Invaders
Loadrunner
Mapopolis
MinehHunt
MobileDB Lt
Mobipocket
MTH!
Parking Lot
Peanut Reader
PocketChess
Reptoids
StarChart
SubHunt
SubSub!
TankPilot
Tricorder
World Finder
WPM
Yoda
I just had to experiment to see which of these would work off the module (add only one at a time and back up when doing so!)

Thumbs up BobbyMike's list

Thanks for the list BobbyMike, you will save me some testing. I forgot that I had Bible Reader and it's files on the Flash Module - I should have remembered that earlier. I use some of the programs you listed, and will probably move a few of them over. I also see a few that I've never heard of before, and I'm going to go look them up at Palmgear...

here is what I have on the 8Mb Flash:

Applications:
Cesium
dbCleaner
HandyShopper2 beta
iSilo
MobileDb lite
ParkingLot
Peanut Reader
pEdit
Quickchart
Quicksheet
SmartDoc
TealPaint
ThinkDB

Of course all of the associated datafiles and docs are on the main unit, but I freed up about 1300K by putting the programs on flash. One exception - Peanut reader must be on the main unit to work correctly.

Later,
Robert

I run Peanut Reader just fine off the module. Just that tiny file, for each file it opens, is kept on the Visor. (info like where you last left off, bookmarks, screen orientation, etc.)

Narnia_77 -

Yes, you are correct. I stand corrected. I now have it on the flash module Don't know why I could not get it to work before.

In addition to the many applications others have listed on their 8-meg module, I also store my documents (some of which are quite large). The latest version of AportisDoc works fine with documents stored on the Flash, as do PeanutReader and QExpress. At this point, I have almost *everything* on the Flash module, with only those applications that I need when using the modem (since it replaces the Flash, obviously) in the Visor proper. The only files I don't have in the Flash are any databases which updated (Quicken, ThinkDB, and XWord puzzles, etc.).

Cool

For what it's worth! I have moved all my applications over to the Visor "proper." I now have finally figured out which files of the PeanutReader can be moved to the Module. I also use the Handheldmed.com Reader for the Merck Manual and The Emergency Medicine Handbook. Since the Merck is 4.6 megs, the module is a GREAT place to store it. I had to delete most everything on my Visor just to get it over to the module but, it has been worth it. So, essentially, I use the module for nothing but, pdb files with no difficulty at all. I too was very frustrated in the beginning on "what I could put on the module." But, with a little playing around with it, I have become quite pleased with the module and it's functionality for me.
