What is the wierdest thing you have ever eaten?

Last night I took my wife to dinner at a five star restaurant (so much for picking up that used Platinum this month) to celebrate her birthday. I recently decided that I liked calimari (deep fried), so I decided that I would try their "five star" version of the appetizer. Well, I was very suprised to be presented with a simple plate with four small, relatively whole squid. They looked like something made of plastic you'd pick up for the kids at the aquarium gift shop. I ate a couple of tenticles, but couldn't bring myself to "pop one" whole into my mouth. Ewww.

Which got me to thinking, what is the wierdest thing you have ever eaten? On a trip to Iceland I ate whale steak, which was pretty tasty (appearance and consistency of beef steak, a little tough, with a subtle fish taste like swordfish). Minke whale I understand. I also ate Puffin. In Iceland Puffins are as common as seagulls, and prepared as we would partidge or pheasant. I had six medalions (breasts), which means I actually ate three puffins. Very dry and gamey. Won't order Puffin again.

I spent a couple of summers in Japan in college, so I've consumed just about any fish you want to name - raw. While there, I also ate these little fish (kind of like a minnow) that are either dried or somehow flash-fried, with the head still on them. You eat them kind of like potato chips, as a bar snack.

Don't think I've ever had whale though, so Keefer's one up on me.

First time in Paris, about 6 years ago, ordered what I thought was lamb chops, but got sauteed lamb brains. My wife managed to order bone marrow, thinking she was getting steak. Oh well, so much for our combined comprehension of High School French lessons. My wife made due with her salad. Me being more adventuresome (maybe stupider!) semi-choked down the brains. The chef actually came out to see how we liked our "local fixin's". Now I know why the people at the next table snickered when we were ordering.

Since I am frequently travelling in China, it is hard to choose the most wierd. Sand worms and camel feet are high on the list. Snake is actually one of the less adventurous. Actually I have found that more often than not, the very expensive, very rare things that people order to show their respect for you as a guest are not very tasty, and if you look carefully, the locals are not eating much of it either.

Sharp Shinned hawk. I've also had muk-tuk (whale blubber).

If deer are odd then I've eaten a lot of that - and bison, elk, caribou, even bear. But as far as wierd I think the hawk is the wierdest. Tasted like chicken (of course) but was the consistency and color of steak. It wasn't good when mixed with the large-mouth bass though. Had we kept to the base of wild leek and cattail roots I think the soup would have been good. (Certainly better than a post-birth one!)

For you adventuresome folks please don't go out shooting hawks and eating them. Here's my story: While driving to the site of my three day practical for my college survival class a bird flew in front of my truck - immediately followed by the doomed sharp-shinned hawk. We collided with both of us probably moving 60 MPH and it impacted my truck's grill and flew over the top of the truck (and not the way birds normally fly). I stopped. Got out. And looked back. Went and looked at my now broken grill. Looked back at the hawk laying in the street and thought about how hungry I'd be during the next 48 hours. It was yummy.

Live monkey brains!

No, actually I have not but I always thought that it was probably the most gross meal that I've heard of.

The story goes "The monkey is strapped beneath a table with its head poking up through a hole. The diners usually deliver the fatal blow with hammers, the skull is sawed off, and the brains are scooped out with spoons." It's probably just a legend though...

I'm not even sure what the stuff was called, but my Korean relatives ordered it for me.

Some species of steak tartar.

Raw beef sliced into slivers, soaked in a maranade of oil and soy sauce, served raw with a raw egg on top.

Goes down real slippery, but I don't think I'll order it again.

In Hawaii, I had some kind of crab. The crab's body was about the size of your thumbnail, and it was whole, and raw. Tasted mostly like seawater.

Cow Tripe

Well I like cow tripe (intestines)! To most people here it would be weird..but where I come from its a delicacy.
