I am observing a strange phenomenon with hotsync. I have two systems that I hotsync to, the first and primary is a notebook, and the second, used only for uploading apps, data, and avantgo channels, is a desktop. The former is connected by a serial cradle and the latter by a USB cradle. With the notebook, hotsync behavior is as random as it was with my original Palm Pilot's--I can never be sure which files are backed up, and so I need to run BackUpAll to make sure that everything is saved. But, strangely, on the desktop, EVERYTHING gets backed up, without the aid of BackupBuddy or BackupAll!

Can anyone tell me what might be happening? (Oh, there is one other difference: the laptop is running Win98 with the Win95 shell (via 98lite), and the desktop is pure Win98.)

Muffin,
Someone, can't find it, posted a message in here about Win 95 not working well with Visor. Your shell 98 lite might not be a true 98 but this is only a guess.

Thanks, RSG. Was the post you referred to addressing USB with Win95? Or was it serial with Win95? I'm using the latter, if it makes any difference. My USB sync is on the desktop--that is the model that does full backup.

Maybe I should ask this: Are there others out there getting full backups with Win98 and USB, without the aid of backup utitlities?

BTW, RSG, I thought I should clarify what I'm doing with the 95 shell. 98lite is the brainchild of this guy in Australia www.98lite.net who figured out that by replacing the Win98 shell with the Win95 shell, one could effectively, and quite gracefully I might add, strip IE from Win98. The kernel and memory management is still Win98--so my machine is still a truly Win98 machine. It's just got a Win95 face. It's faster, STABLER all around, and it's nicer to my wimpy 100mhz Pentium with 40MB of RAM. But having said all that, you could still be right that it's goofing up my hotsyncs. Though I can't figure out why.

On the mac side, my imac locks up at the instant i push the hotsync button nearly half the time. i have reinstalled the software, and it did not help. anybody got any ideas?

Mine does a backup on sync without any intervention. Just push the button and everything is updated and the Visor is backed up. Don't know what to tell you.

Has anybody had problems with Outlook getting screwed up? It seems that after I hotsync a few times, that I can't get outlook to start (it claims it can't get to a .dll) so I have to reinstall it.

I'm running Win 98 and Outlook 97. Maybe that's my problem. Windows 98 isn't backwards compatible with OL 97 :-). yeah, that's the ticket...

Well, I'm stumped. The synching issue was more along the lines of USB and Win95 so I'm not sure what to tell you. One more question though, what other software differences are there between your laptop and desktop units.

I'd suggest looking there and see if there is some type of conflict. I'll say this much although it won't help your situation but it will add fuel to the fire. When I initially downloaded IE 5.0 and installed it...lost the use of some proprietary Fox Pro programs. Stumped the MS tech support mind you and not the free techies. They never could figure it out. After 6 weeks of various attempts to fix, I had to re-image the hard drive back to the way it was.

That should tell you that MS doesn't even know what causes stuff to happen.

Also, when I initially synced my Visor, not all of my software loaded on the first try. It did load everthing that was in the backup directory but not all of my extra software is nested there. Backup buddy solved this issue and since I did have a Visor crash on me and had purchased BB in the meantime before the crash when the replacement came all was well.

Thanks folks. Staad, at least I know there is one other person besides me who is getting BackupBuddy features without BackupBuddy! Are you using USB or serial?

And RSG...HAHAHAAAAHAHA!!! Uh, there are way too many software differences between these two machines for me to even want to troubleshoot it. I'm not laughing at you--I'm laughing at the craziness of it all. I'll write off what's happening to my hotsyncs as a feature and live with it.

This is scarry. We both have similar machines. I'm running a G6-400 II that just lost it's video card on Monday. Waiting replacment. Mine failed due to poor installation initially over a year ago when I got the machine.

And of course this has absolutely nothing to due with this post...I'm just bored.

Didn't misintrepret the laughter. I'm in the same boat. My laptop and desktop live in two totally different worlds but it was a question only if they were close in your case.

I will mention that I've seen certain extra Palm Software reside in it own directories that doesn't back up normally. Examples: Desktop to Go, Action Names and a couple of others. With my desktop "down" I can't remember the others but I do know those two for sure.

Good Luck with this issue. If you get an answer or a fix let me know though.

If you had the PCI video card, that could be a problem. It's not just Gateway, though. ALL PCI cards tend to "walk" from the slot during transport. We reseat ALL cards of machines that come into the office, but the PCI's are the worst!

BTW, my G-6 video would have been DOA because the card was over 1/2 out! I opened the case and reseated everything before I even attached the power cord. System has been 100% trouble free in hardware.

I have an imac and an Orange visor Delux. I just got it today, less than 4 weeks from when i ordered it. I hotsynced it once to add a bunch of programs and now a message pops up that shows a picture of a palm and says "waiting for sender". i don't know what i did to cause the or how to make it stop, other than turn the IR off. HELP

I did have to do some work on my G3 mac to get it going. I had installed a new USB card a belkin PC PCI card. The and apples drivers from the apple tech site. I then had to turn hot sync on and it worked fine. There is a trouble shooting site here on visor that you may get some help from.

Thanks for the heads up. Card worked fine initially and failed shortly after a month when adding a CD burner, the conflict arc'd the unit and that's when we (tech and I) discovered the "short". Reinstalled and worked fine until death on Monday. I am on the road so I don't know if the replacement unit has arrived yet but it is an AGP card.

Third Gateway unit and this was the first to walk a PCI slot. I'll watch for it in the future though.
