Question

I just got a Startac 7868W with Verizon service, and would like to use it with my Visor (via a supplynet or cables4pdas cable) to access the Web. What's the final word: do I have to sign up for Verizon's wireless web service to do this, or can I just hook up the phone and Visor and dial in to my ISP (Earthlink) as I normally would?

This will allow you to connect to the Net without a ISP.
You will be using Verizon's.

The QNC settings are as follows:

Under Prefs, go to Connection
Create a Custom Connection named "QNC."
Set "Connection Method" to Serial to PC
Under "Details"
Set Speed to 19,200 bps
Set Flow Ctl to On Hit OK, then OK again to get back to the main connection screen.

Go to Network.
Create a new Service named "Verizon"
Set User Name to qnc (lower case letters)
Set Password to qnc (again, lower case letters)
Set Connection to QNC (which you created under Connection screen)
Go to Details
Set Connection type to PPP
Set Idle timeout to Power Off
Check the Query DNS setting
Check the IP Address Automatic setting
Go to Script
Tap End, change it to Send
Add in the command atdt#777
Tap End, change it to Send CR
Tap End, change it to Delay
Add in the command 4
Then leave the last line as End.
Hit OK, then OK again.

Brooklyn, are you using QNC?

Brooklyn,

Are you actually using QNC on Verizon? Many people have been trying to get QNC to work but have had no luck. If you are using QNC and these are the settings you use, would you mind if I post them on my website?

Thanx,

Brooklyn:

I have a Visor Solo, so I don't have a Connections option under Preferences. Any other ideas, anyone?

Question Change is Verizon's QNC wireless service?

Greetings all,

Has anyone else had problems getting on to Verizon's QNC wireless web service using the StarTac-to-Visor (Prism) SupplyNet cable and the settings set forth in Brooklyn's post above?

I had been connecting consistently up until a few days ago. Now I can't connect; I get a time-out error during the connection process. I DO have Verizon's wireless web service, and it works fine on my cell phone. I also know that my StarTac works fine as a modem, as I am still able to use it to connect my laptop wirelessly through it to the Internet. But now my Prism just returns a time-out error. Specifically, after tapping the Connect button, I get the following error message at the "Service Connection Progress" screen: "Error: PPP timeout (0x1231)". I have triple-checked the Connection and Network settings, made sure that the cable is connected properly to both the Prism and the StarTac (yes, the StarTac does beep twice when I try to connect), and have a very strong digital signal on the phone.

This is happening in Philly. I'll be in the NYC area this weekend so hopefully it will work there.

I suspect that I may be doing something stupid or leaving out some vital setting or process. If I had not been accessing this service over the last two weeks, I would just chalk this up to my inability to configure my Visor properly or to a Verizon issue. But I have seen this work with my own eyes using this Prism and this StarTac, so I'm completely baffled and frustrated.

Any assistance or suggestions that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. I highly value this wireless capability and would hate to lose it.

Smile QNC works in NYC

Well, my Prism-to-StarTac combo connects wirelessly to Verizon here in NYC, so I now know that my QNC settings are correctly inputted. Must be a Philly problem. Hopefully it will come up soon down there.

Smile Philly now working

Verizon Wireless's QNC now works in Philly. Why it didn't last week, I'll never know. Anyway, life is good again in Visorland.

This is good to know, as I'm smack dab right in the middle of the NY and Philly service areas. (Philly is my "home area", but my home is in the NY region. Thank goodness for singlerate.)

I've been on the fence about getting a cable, but now I'm leaning towards getting one. Thanks for the info.

Thumbs down

For those of you seeking clarification about Verizon QNC and the Visor, the following should be kept in mind. Verizon QNC works with Visor Prism and above because it has version 3.5 of the Palm OS. Visor solo and Visor Deluxe have the 3.1 version of the OS and will not connect to Verizon QNC because they have the old "serial connection manager". From what I can tell, the difference is in the "serial to PC" and "Serial to Modem" options available in OS 3.5. However, Visor Solo and Deluxe owners can still connect to their ISP using dial-up.

I just started using Verizon's Mobile Web and it is great. With Blazer and a Prism, I can get on the net almost anywhere. I highly recommend it.
