Talking

I had a problem with my Visor syncing very sporadically... I deleted the registry key specified below and BINGO all troubles were solved- perfect syncing everytime. Just in time to save my sanity.

Hope it works for you too.

If you are unable to perform HotSync, please do the following;

1] Check setting on your computer.

Verify the 'HotSync Manager' is running on the computer. The 'HotSync Manager' should be a small, circular red and blue icon in the system tray on the computer. (By default, it is in the lower right corner of the computer screen, next to the time).
Click once on the 'HotSync Manager'. A small pop-up menu should appear.
Make sure only 'Local USB' checked. Remove the check marks beside 'Local Serial' if necessary.

2] Do soft reset on your Visor.

A SOFT RESET tells your handheld to stop what it's doing and start over again. All records and entries stored in your Handheld are retained. A soft reset solves a wide range of common problems.

To perform a soft reset:

1. Find a thin paper clip, bent open paper staple or similar object without a tip that is not too sharp.
2. Find the hole labeled "RESET" on the back side of the Visor near the right hand edge. (hole is immediately to the right of the Handspring "Flip" logo)
3. Gently press the paper clip into the reset hole.
4. A successful soft reset is indicated by the Welcome screen, followed by the General Preferences screen.

Now attempt a HotSync....

If fails, please do the step below;

You need to delete a USB related registry key.

DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING IN THE REGISTRY OTHER THAN THE KEY SPECIFIED BELOW. YOU CAN SEVERELY DAMAGE YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM BY ACCIDENTLY DELETING ITEMS IN THE REGISTRY.

1. Click Start | Run, enter in the field "regedit" the click the OK button. This opens Registry Editor.

2. Click Registry | Export Registry File... enter a name for the file and click on the Save button.

3. Navigate the branches of the registry by pressing the + key. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\USB\VID_082D&PID_0100 and delete that registry key.

4. Close Registry Editor

5. Restart your computer and try a HotSync operation.

Thank you,
Handspring Technical Support

Question

What exactly were the symptoms that caused you to do this? Just curious, sometimes my Visor doesn't want to sync, but I'm probably too chicken to go into the registry.

Once every so often the Visor would sync perfectly... but most times I would have to try over and over again, experimenting with holding it down and wiggling it around (I'm not too sure if that ever did anything) in order to get it work.

Thinking back, this all might have been because when I first got my Visor, I was so excited that I hooked up the cradle, put my Visor in it, and pressed the Sync button before I installed the software.

Talking Thanks harrryguy

Man this has been driving me batty!!!!
I've had no problems hotsyncing at work with a Serial cradle/Windows 95 but in the last two months there was only one day I could hot sync at home USB/Windows 98SE. I tried everything I could think of--even how I was sitting in the chair. Thanks for passing on the info. I only needed to go as far as the soft reset to get it going.

Unhappy

Under Windows 2000, I found 3 copies of this key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USB\Vid_082d&Pid_0100
" \ " \ControlSet002\ " \ " \ "
" \ " \CurrentControlSet\ " \ " \ "

However, I can't delete any of them! They all give me a message saying "Cannot Delete Vid_082d&Pid_0100: Error while deleting key." Any thoughts here?

Cool Addition

Here's one more: I've been having problems with my Visor HotSyncing sporadically - often it would get to "Identifying User" and then give up. I found that the following things sometimes helped:

1. SOFT RESET. Reset the device, then LEAVE IT FOR A FEW MINUTES and try HotSyncing again.

2. DUAL CYCLE. If that doesn't work, try the reset again, but close and re-open HotSync Manager on the desktop too.

3. THE CRADLE WILL ROCK. Put the Visor in its cradle, then tip it towards you about an inch so it isn't snapped in to the cradle anymore. Now rock the Visor from side to side several times and try the HotSync again. Repeat several times if necessary.

4. TINKERERS' SOLUTION. If you've recently been working inside your Visor and you messed with the screws that secure the main board, try changing the screws' tightness. I know it sounds weird, but sometimes it works.

5. DUAL RESET. Reset both your Visor and your desktop and try the HotSync again.
