Strangely enough even though I have Win95 OSR2 (version # is 4.00.950b), the USB drivers are not present on the CD-ROM. Luckily I found the drivers here:
http://www.windrivers.com/company/intel/index.htm

I set them up according to the instructions at:
http://www.axnet.net/pages/virtual/...sb_install.html

Please note that I had to point to c:\windows\inf for the USB Host Controller drivers instead of c:\windows\system, which was okay for the Root Hub drivers.

After that I ran the USBReady.exe file and it reports that my system is now fully setup for USB support! Unfortunately I don't have any USB devices to try it with, but I'm hoping (please please please) that the Visor will work with it because I don't want to spend money on Windoze98 when I'm fine with Win95.

So, give these drivers a go if you can. Perhaps if there are people out there with Visor units already (review units?), maybe you can try and see if it works?

I can't wait to order the Visor! I've already ordered some NiMH batteries and a charger from http://www.nimhbattery.com/index.htm in anticipation of my first PDA. <smile>

Cheers,

Tears in Rain,

Thanks for the driver info. I looked around for the driver before and could not find it. I installed it and checked USB support with USBready. It says my win95 is now ready. I am curious if the Visor will work too. I really don't want to buy another cradle if I don't need it. I would appreciate if any of you out there has win 95 4.00.950 b and has installed usbsupp to see if the usb devices work decently or not.

thanks,
-gene

I don't have a Win 95 system around to test on, but be warned that:
(1) Windows 95's USB add-on is not functionally equivalent to the USB support in Win 98, and many USB peripherals will not work with Windows 95/USB.
(2) The Visor box *specifies* Windows 98. That doesn't bode well for the USB sync working with 95.

Used copies of Win 98 can be found pretty cheap nowadays...

USB is currently an imperfectly-realized technology even under Win98; but I can attest that USB support under Win95 OSR2 is minimal at best. I had so many problems getting USB peripherals to work under Win95 that I was pretty much forced to upgrade. From the very outset, many USB peripherals omitted Win95 drivers altogether. I guess there's no harm in trying, but I suspect you'll find yourself upgrading.

Unhappy

I asked about Win95 and USB when I ordered my Visor yesterday. They said I needed Win98 to use USB. They suggested the optional serial cradle to use with Win95, which I ordered.

Question

I might have to get the serial cradle then, but will I notice a considerable speed difference over USB? How fast is an average sync?

Basically I'll be transfering text files, e-mail and AvantGO on a regular basis.

I have the Visor USB cradle on my Win98 machine at home, and I'm waiting for my serial cradle for my NT4 box at work. I don't know if it's a difference between the Palm vs. Visor or Serial vs. USB, but hotsyncing the Visor via USB is amazingly fast. The first time I thought it had failed, because it was over so quickly. I'm hoping this is a function of Visor vs. Palm, but as it's Palm's HotSync Manager, I think it must be the USB.

mbergen,

You have a Visor? How on earth did you get one? Who's holding out on us? Well, if you do have one, give us all the details. What do you think?

I have serveral USB devices running on windows 95 OSR2. I installed the drives listed and still could not get the USB port working so I reluctantly upgraded to Windows 98, big mistake. This caused other problems with my system. I finnaly gave up decided to uninstall Windows 98 and return the scanner I'd bought. After I got windows 95 up and running again I tried one more time. Walla!! I'd installed all the drives but never enabled the USB port in my bios. Don't forget that step. USB will work in windows 95 given the right system.

Windows 95 holdout.
