The update is for:

OmniSky Flash Updater for Handspring Visor Platinum/Prism
The OmniSky Flash Updater upgrades the flash memory on your Minstrel S modem with new software that reduces the frequency of serial errors. This download is recommended for Minstrel S users experiencing serial errors.

And can found at:

Definitely seems more stable

It seems to only give me errors now when I move between the Power on app and the Minstral app, most of the other moves don't seem to cause the notorius Fatal Error. Before loading it today I must have had ten Fatal Errors in 20 minutes at lunch.

BTW, when they sent me a replacement modem this week I found the the OmniSky and Mail apps were NOT installed on the internal memory but stayed on the modem, unlike the modem I swapped out. Even the tech service rep (bless their little "do a hard reset and call me in the morning" hearts) were nonplussed when I told them.

The OmniSky page says it is to correct "serial" problems. I take that to mean that the update is for anyone using a serial connection to HotSync their Visor with their desktop rather than USB.

Right. Wrong?

I would guess "serial connections" have to do with the springport connection between the modem and the visor. I've done all kinds of stuff using the Minstrel model, yanking it in and out of the visor, switching between apps, shutting off and moving to another app, and haven't gotten a Fatal Error yet.

Keep it up OmniSky! Now get more cell support and stronger signals and we'll be able to really play. At least until the 3G wireless stuff arrives. I wonder if their flash ROM is up to a speed increase?

I think that 19.2k bps is the max for CDPD technology. I think that the only increase would be in "apparent" speed due to file compression.

I'd say it's probably more to do with the actual RF transmission/reception and not the springport connection, don't forget that it's "serial" too.. That is the place you'd be most likely to have problems.

Thanks

From what I understand about the way the Minstrel S is sold with a (prepackaged) service from Novatel.. In a word, Yes.
