Question

I've come across a few of you using this case and have a couple of questions. I just recieved the case and love the durability my concern is the possibility of the unit falling out of the case. There seems to be no way to securely hold the visor in other than a rubber band. If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it greatly.

I had the same concerns. To fix it, I've added a strip of velcro (about an inch long) to the springboard portion of my Visor and the exposed metal part of the slider case.

Although I wasn't thrilled about applying an adhesive strip to my PDA, it has worked great. Don't regret doing it at all ... yet.

Here's a little known fact...the Rhinoskin Ti Cockpit fits the Visor quite well. It's held in by a rail on the side...and two rails on top and bottom that run about half the width of the Visor. The cover opens like a book and doesn't slide under...but it's much more secure. I've tride my Visor in a Slider...and it makes me nervous too.

If you are willing to trade the slide-under cover for a book-like format...the Cockpit is a great idea. Mine only cost $59 and I love it....

LynnBob,

You mean to tell me your Cockpit works with the Visor? My old one doesn't. (I just sold it.) I tried desperately to get it in there, to no avail.

ragamuffinn,

It's tight, but it does fit. The neoprene is fairly well compressed...so this may impact shock resistance (no pun intended). The first time it is somewhat tight...but works well after several insertions. The neoprene at the bottom gets kind of a "V" shaped indentation in it and the top is fairly well compressed as well...but it fits. I would not have thought so...but Factoid recommended it on a different thread...so I gave it a shot...and I like it. Go figure...

LynnBob,

I am going to check this out RIGHT NOW. (Luckily the actual transaction has not occurred yet, and I still have the ti case in my paws.) I will report back as soon as I get the verdict.

You're right! I initially reported (and since deleted) a message saying that my visor could not fit. When I read the Yahoo page referenced in the post you made above, I FORCED my Visor into the Ti case. Voila! It fit! But not without tearing the neoprene, and not without my thinking that I'd snap my Visor in half first.

It does fit, but I would hate to drop the case. Right now I'm using the Rhinopak 1100, which is quite shock absorbent. Forcing the Visor into the Cockpit does exactly as you say: shock aborbancy is reduced. The reduction is too great for my peace of mind. The shock endured in a fall with the Cockpit would be just as violent to the Visor's insides as an unprotected fall would be.

i purchased the Ti slider for my visor, but i ended up returning it to Rhinoskin. I loved the idea behind the case, but the fact that the visor isn't secured to the case in any way is just absurd - especially after you consider the cost - a hefty $100. I considered the velcro idea, but i couldn't bring myself to fool with the thing any longer - so back it went.... My final impression of the case was that Rhino skin just slapped the visor label on a case designed for a palm pilot. For example, there is a slot at the top of the case for an IR port (perfect for the palm). If you insert the visor in the Ti case in the upright position, the IR port is blocked. Somebody reviewed this case at visor central, and found that if you insert the visor in the Ti case upside down (not screen down), then the port was accessible. This works - but christ - i just spent a hundred bucks, and now i have to add velcro, and insert the visor upside down whenever i think i might beam something to somebody... Not the right tool for the job.

ragamuffinn,

Oh sure...make me have second thoughts...I'm most concerned about crushing the screen, however, since I often carry in my front pocket...or in my soft-sided brief case. The quest for the perfect "high impact" case continues....

Why couldn't RhinoSkin make a HS version of the Cockpit...or put the little top and bottom lips from the Cockpit on the Slider? We can all figure this out...why can't Rhinoskin? I know, I know...they just threw these modified Palm cases out on the market...but it's still annoying...

Informational item re: Cockpit...

So...since the last post I spent about half an hour with my Cockpit...a good pair of pliers...and a cloth baby diaper (to prevent scratching...

I bent the top and bottom of the case out a bit...then tinkered around with the cover so that it would close...and viola...the Visor slides in really easily...the top closes with a bit more metallic clank than it did before (still more work to be done there)...and the case looks the same (i.e. no visible dents, dings, etc....). Now...I had (as previously mentioned dinged up the neoprene pretty badly (sliding...or really wiggling the visor in and out) before bending the case a bit...so I'll need to replace the top and bottom padding...and then maybe a bit more bending...but I think this is a keeper...still not perfect...but...close enough for my purposes...

lynn bob -
i admire you for all the effort you've put into this - trying to modify the cockpit to accomodate the visor - but jeez - for all the work it takes to get the thing to work, they should be giving them away... i haven't tried the cockpit (had the slider), but i think i'm going to wait for something that's actually designed FOR the visor...

Talking

Wow! LynnBob...impressive. good work.

I really did not mean to psyche you out. I love the screen protection of the cockpit too. I just didn't want to deal the shock to my senses everytime I drop the thing.

Two things: First, if you want replacement neoprene, just write to Rhinoskin. They'll send it to you FREE OF CHARGE. Those guys are just awesome. Be sure to tell them that you have the cockpit. Second, the reason they won't make a cockpit for the Visor is that it's officially discontinued. I think that's the reason it's selling at "bargain basement" prices. (I think it's a way better design though. I like the fact that the handheld can't come out of the case unless you want it to.) Now...I guess the real question is Why won't Rhinoskin recontinue the cockpit?

ragamuffinn,

Thanks for the advice...I'll email Rhinoskin re: replacement neoprene. Bending it wasn't that big a deal...I bet I only moved each end less than a millimeter...it opens and closes better now too.

I'll also see if they can tell me why they've decided to kill the Cockpit. I won't hold my breathe for an answer...but one never knows...
