I am thinking about buying a visor and wondered if anyone could shed light on the following:

-The visor comes standard with USB cradle, I am running NT, so can I get a convertor from USB to serial (and if so where from in the UK), or is it cheaper to buy the Serial cradle.

-My laptop does have infra-red capabilities, so could I use this for hot syncing as well, and what software do I need to get for my visor/laptop to use this

Regards

Jim

Arrow

If you purchase your Visor directly from Handspring, you can get the serial cradle for an additional $20. Regular $29.

Get a serial cable. I and others have had problems with USB. Putting the Visor in the cradle re-boots my system....but not always.
Had to reinstall HotSync last night because of constant GPF. Probably DLL hell or USB. I use serial to hot sync at work. Slower than USB, but I am transferring some large word documents and the wait is not agonizing. Another collegue at work even gets reboots when he uses his USB scanner. USB is a nice concept but seems to have a few bugs left.

Thumbs up

Had my VDX since last November.
- I've used the USb cradle without problems on my Win 98 home machine.
- bought the Serial cradle for my NT 4.0 computer at work. Works fine - with only minor, occasional failures to sync.
-- I've sort of traced it to other apps running - especially Outlook 2000.
-- I usually just shut all other apps then sync w.o issues. Rarely, I've got to do a reset on the VDX.
- Really minor inconveniences considering the benefit I get from the VDX.

Same here.
I bought my VDX as opposed to a palm because of the springboard slot and the availability of the backup module. If I am away from my PC and have to hard reset the VDX, I can recover.

I don't think you can sync with IR. This, I believe, is one major difference between the Visor and the Palm.
