Before somebody steps in and says "this has been discussed already - see <link> this thread..." I should note that I've followed the directions in the other threads on Win2000 IR Sync and they don't seem to work.

I have a Dell Latitude P2-400 and a Prism. I have tried to install the desktop update, didn't work. Then I realized I was supposed to install the new Palm Desktop 4.0 (exactly per the instructions.) This bombs. It tells me that it has detected an incompatible version of hotsync, and then gives me one of those wonderfully worthless messages: "please contact your hardware vendor for more information."

If somebody has insight here... it would be appreciated ;-)

If you are using a visor you cant sync with palm desktop's hotsync manager because of the drivers
What you can do is install palm 4.0 and than after that install palm 3.1 custom and only install the sync manager
that should work
And as far as Ir syncing to Win2k unless you have the latest service packs and uprgades FORGET About it since WIN2K want designed for it

My problem is that Palm 4.0 won't even install... it won't even start the install before it says that it found an incompatible version of hotsync... Perhaps a full uninstall of the old version would solve this?

I'm leaning towards "forgetting about it" as my current setup works great, syncs clean, etc. I've tried following the step-by-step but it hasn't worked.

You CAN do IR sync with a Visor if you want to give up USB. The HotSync version that allows IR syncing doesn't have USB. The problem with Win 2000 is that it doesn't recognize 'virtual COM ports' which is the reason you need the new version of HotSync.

Brian, I've no help on the IR thang but there's a thread floating about called something like NEW, NEW PALM DESKTOP. It reports that palm has posted a new version of PD4.0 to their site in an effort to relieve their support staff and encourage os-licensees to release device specific versions of the PD4.0.

Anyway, it claims this version can still be installed by removing the hotsync files prior to the install.

Just found it try http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...?threadid=11689

HTH as this wasn't meant to be a

Hey John,

It is entirely possible to sync USB on one PC (your desktop) and then IR on another (your Laptop) if you can maintain discipline when making updates to your PIM data.

Just make sure when set up your dual-PC syncfest, that you let the 'first' PC overwrite the handheld. When you sync to the second machine for the first time, let the handheld overwrite the PC. At that point all machines will have the same data (PIM data).

If you make updates on the PC #1, the handheld will get the updates. Then when you sync to PC #2, PC #2 will get the same updates.

ok I got the computer to to see the IR, but it will not hotsync. I have tired plam 4.0 that did not work, then tired the hotsync portion of palm 3.1. What am I missing?
