Cool

While browsing my local OfficeMax for possible styli and WriteRights I came across a pack of 3 plastic PalmPilot refil styli... Now, I was guessing they'd fit my Visor (I don't have it yet) but they cost $7.50 for three -- not a bad price, but it gets better.
While an employee did a price check (they weren't labeled) I noticed some Cross(tm) styli in the same case -- DigitalWriter Duo, etc. Strangely enough I found a chrome Cross DigiWriter for $2.00. Yes, that's $2.00, I did NOT misplace the decimal point. It turns out that either Cross has discontinued this product and/or OfficeMax will no longer carry them. At $18+ on the Cross website, I couldn't pass up this $2.00 deal! I would suggest that if you have an OfficeMax in your area, check to see if they have these fine writing instruments before they're sold out..

Some things are too good to be true, this ISN'T! Cheaper than a plastic stick, I couldn't believe it.

It's a Century Classic (chrome) DigiWriter
If you'd like to see what it looks like:

After all the discussion about styli, I thought you all might care for a break. Good luck in finding one!

Would you be willing to buy me 4 and mail them up to me in Canada for 15 US bucks? I believe it would cost about $3 bucks to mail them. No Office Max up here.

I went to my local OfficeMax tonite (Piscataway, NJ), and found these nice styli. I picked up three - one in chrome, one in "gold", and one in gunmetal blue. I figure I'll lose one eventually, or I can color-coordinate with my clothing for the day :-)

The tip is very nice and "silky" in its gliding across my visor screen. I'm thouroughly impressed for $2, although I would've maybe liked a little more weight to the thing. Oh well, the metal is still better than the plastic handspring default.

The stylus part of the "pen" appears to just be an insert. I guess if someone were so inclined they could just pop in an ink refill to use the body as a pen. Not bad for $2.

The manager had said that recently product lines have been dropped or went out of rotation in favor of another, and that OfficeMax has been doing the low-price thing on many items. I think she might've snatched the last few styli in the display case for "christmas presents", but anyone in the Rutgers area should check out the Stelton Road OM to see if any are left.

Perhaps I should make my thesis "the economics of OfficeMax clearance items & capitalizing on good luck" :-)

I purchased the more traditional Cross stylus pen with the hefty fat body and ballpoint at the opposite end. I like the feel and it makes Graffiti writing easier. I have the chrome Cross pen style in a ballpoint and don't care for it as much for writing.

I also find that I am using my Cross stylus as a pointer in desktop discussions alot and not accidentally writing all over someone's presentation. I tend to always have a pen in hand.

The most important thing about the Cross stylus is its stylus tip. I've been using it for more than a week now and have nary a scratch on my screen. Whatever that tip is, it is the smoothest and best.

Where was the first ODepot that had them? I check ours out today with no luck. I'm in Northern VA.

geoffh:

It's Office Max, not Office Depot. The one in my town (maybe all of them) doesn't display them in the case, but rather keeps them locked up in the back so you have to ask for it.

Great deal; thanks wrp for the tip!

Hot-diggedy! Bought four. Our local OfficeMax still had them marked at the original price ($19-$39). Clerk was flabbergasted when he checked the price...

Now...if I only had my Visor...

You're welcome for the tip, and I'm glad to hear that they're high-quality instruments; though I expected that much from Cross.

I'll have to go back to the store to see if they have any more. A spare or two probably wouldn't hurt at all. I don't have my Visor yet so I'm pleased to hear about the "silky" tip that's unlike any other according to Green and Davydd.

Someone, somewhere in Office Max's product selection department, will wonder why these products started selling so fast, and how the nation found out about $2 so soon. Maybe they'll even keep them in rotation after this, who knows -- albeit for a much higher retail price.

Wink

Well, You could always buy the Townsend Lapis Lazuli from Cross http://www.cross-pcg.com/products/digital/models.html instead... or maybe another VDx for the same money.

I went to my local office max last night. Alas, they had them, but they were still in the $20-35 range. So, I opted to pass on them. Wish they were that price here...

Thanks for the tip!!! They were still marked at their normal price $20-30, I had them do a price check and the clerk could not believe they came up at $2.00!

Thanks again great tip!

Now if I only had my visor I'd be all set.

Thanks for the great tip!
Went to my local Office Max and looked at the chrome one. While the counter display indicated $19.95, I asked the gal if it was really any cheaper. She keyed in the number and was astonished at the $2.00 price. Unfortunately, they only had the display model left.
Out of curiosity, I asked if any of the others were marked down. The Graphite (gunmetal) which was marked $29.95, and the 14K Gold which was marked $39.95 BOTH came up at $2.00 each. Needless, to say, I am set on Styli--I just wish my Visor would come.
Thanks again for the great tip!

My local store can't seem to find this item. Does anyone have the SKU or vendor number so they can look it up? I'd really appreciate it if you take a look at your reciept! Thanks

The SKU# for the Chrome one is 073228027937. I'm going to try to go back for other colors.

Good Luck.

The SKU off the gold is 073228027944
and the graphite one is 073228027951
My office max only had 7 left.
2 graphite, 2 gold, and three silver... up went my $14 dollars plus tax. I'm off to the other three Officemax in my area on Monday. I've already given one as a gift.
I took the Stylus out of a silver and put in a blue pen refill. Call me cheap but, these things are going to all my friends w/ PDA's

Cool

WRP: Gracias...

While I can't say that the Cross Digiwriter is the most substantial Pen/Pencil/Stylus I've ever used, it doesn't really matter for $2.00.

I snagged the last one at my local OfficeMax (Hanover?, NJ)...

Has anyone needed to replace the stylus bit on one of these? Are they more expensive than the entire stylus itself?

Now I just can't wait for Handspring to send me something to use my new stylus on...

-WL

...(waiting for 11/09/99 order)...

I went to officemax today, snatched the last cross digiwriter from the shelf. Ran to ring it up, and was told it was 12 Bucks. I was bummed. Has this happened to anyone else?
