Question

Can the 8mb flash module also be used to perform a backup in the same manner as the backup module itself?

The short answer is... no.

There is no software application currently available to do a backup to the Flash Module. Conversely, the Backup Module cannot be used to store and run applications.

The short answer is yes. If you go into the FileMover application and choose to view all (instead of only Apps or DBs) and then choose Select All, you can then copy everything from your Visor to the 8MB Flash card. It takes longer than the Backup Module, but it still works.

Thank's for the info!! With that, I will try the backup module and see how well it meets my needs!! (Since it's a few dollars cheaper)

Boy, don't I feel stupid now...

James, does what you describe really do a full backup of EVERYTHING including data from the built-ins? I seem to recall seeing somewhere that "true" backups were not possible on the 8mbFM. At least they were not the same as what the Backup Module did...

Then again, these days I barely know where I am...

Cool

Don't sweet it Mark!! I gave some advice 2 days ago that was also bogus to an extent. No harm, no foul. Definetly hard to stay up on things in this ever changing world of technology!!

Actually it depends. There may be some appications that will not be "fully" backed up. I've tried to do a restore of my DragonPen application and it didn't work. Everytime I tried using it, the Visor CRASHED! I had to do a re-install and then everything was fine.

Overall I like the 8MB FM better than the Backup Module. You can restore individual items with the FM but NOT the BM (so I've been told). If you are on the road, and you have to do a hard-reset, a partial set of working applications is better than none.

You can't back up the applications (you don't need to because they're in ROM), but you can backup the data files. Here's a pic from the FileMover app (from my 8MB review):

Granted, it's clunkier. I would rather own both or get the Backup module and the InnoPak/2V so you can have extra data.

Of course, if there are any "hidden" databases, you wouldn't be able to back those up using the 8MB module. So we'll call it a draw Mark. Your crucial data will be backed up though.

I've had problems with my 8m flash module crashing my Visor. I noticed recently when I use the Filemover function, it locks up, and I have to do a soft reset. Yesterday I had a hard crash and had to do a hard reset. I haven't used Filemover since then. Anyone else have similar problems?

I've noticed that the TrekSounds hack is incompatible with FileMover. I disabled it and have had no problems since.

Wink

JEBaldwin: Thanks for the info - - I disabled mine too, hopefully that will solve the crash problems. The only other thing I think might have caused the hard crash was a new Avantgo channel I suscribed (and recently unsuscribed) to: Asimba. It's a personal training website and asks for workout inputs. I remember inputting some data, turning my Visor off, turning it back on, and then immediately getting the "fatal error" screen of death, then the looping Palm logo screen you get when you do a soft reset, and ultimately performing the hard reset.
Wonder if there are any other incompatible programs with the 8m flash.

Did you try the update Handspring posted on the 8MB module? Go to their support section to find it.

Already have the update before the crashes began. I think it's the Trek sounds. So far, so good.

Question

Apparent ditto of JEBaldwin... I had the TrekSounds, and loved them. After a few weeks, it started freezing my GVD several times a day. Fortunately, they were only soft resets. I finally just disabled them. I didnt make the connection with FileMover until I read this thread around that time, I started using the 8MB module.
