Question

I have an older computer. I am trying to figure out to hotsync both a Palm & a Visor. I have both hot sync cradles. Are there some general things I need to know?

First off, I'm assuming the Palm cradle is the standard serial plug, and the Visor cradle is hooked into the USB port, right? If the Visor is a serial plug as well and you're swapping cradles each time, you may want to invest in a USB card for the computer:

This will allow USB devices to plug into the computer.

As for the software side of things, I'm not sure the best process for setting up both PDAs on one system. Anyone else have answers?

I have a Visor and my wife has a Palm, the way I have them syncing to the computer is I installed the Visor software in a different directory than the Palm. The only problem, we use two different Hotsyncs that have to run separatly from each other.

What do you mean by that? I'm not sure I understand.

Cool

Hello y'all!

I have a Palm Vx and a Visor on my ThinkPad 240 (the Palm is connected via the serial port and the Visor via the USB). I set up two users on the Palm Desktop (open Tools, Users). I then customize the hotsynch manager each time I synch(click Local Serial for the Palm, Local USB for the Visor). I identify which user to synch (click Custom) and synchronize each PDA one after the other.

I hope these help.

I installed the Desktop software twice, under different directories "Palm" and "Visor". I then put shortcuts on the desktop for each unit so I have "Hotsync Visor" and "Hotsync Palm". Now when My wife or I have to Hotsync we click on the desktop icon for our units and Hotsync, and when we're done we close out of the Hotsync.
This also keeps our records and addresses separate from each other, because, she has a home busines and I don't want all her customers in my Visor.
If you use one Desktop Software with different users you end up syncing the same addresses/memos/etc. on each unit.

I never thought of trying that, but I could see how that would work ideally.

Hope that helps, L-SW!

It really does not need to be that complex. Hotsync supports multiple users, with totally separate data in different subdirectories.

Install the first user, then in Palm Desktop, just use the Tools\Users\New command to create another user. Their data will be in separate subdirectories like c:\...\Palm\User1 and c:...\Palm\User2.

Note that Palm's version of HotSync does not support USB, so if you sync the Visor USB then you need to install Handspring's version of Palm Desktop, which supports both. Simply click the HotSync icon in the system tray and ensure both Local Serial and Local USB are checked off (it allows multiple selections).

Also you don't need to specify which handheld you are syncing (except for the first sync). The handheld has a UserID / UserName, so after the first sync (which installs the User onfo on the handheld) Hotsync knows which unit is being synced.

Hope this helps...

Smile Palm & Visor HotSyncs

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I have also figured out I need to do a hard re-set on the Palm (it used to belong to me and now belongs to my husband) and then he will be able to hotsync under his own user name.
Both the Palm & Visor hotsync cradles are serial -- I don't have a USB on my ancient computer.
My son suggested I try this discussion board and he was right -- it has been a great deal of help.

Thanks again,
L-SW
