Talking

Ok, for any developers out there (Handspring guys included, if you're watching)...

I need a FLIR (Forward-Looking InfraRed) Springboard. I can understand the design constraints of the Springboard slot leaving the IR on the side, but come on! So far, I'm the only Palm user I know switching to Handspring, and they all have the front-mounted IR. If anyone is sitting to my right in a meeting, I can't be him anything without great inconvenience (I'd be beaming with my Visor upsidedown!)...

So maybe not just a normal FLIR, but a higher-power/longer-range FLIR for anyone who would want to control TV/Stereo/other IR-capable unit.

Oh, and don't make the thing cost $50! $19.95 for a basic unit should be more than enough. (Ok, I really have no idea what would be reasonable... I just know I wouldn't want to have to fork out a ton for a feature that should've been taken away in the first place.)

I might be willing to pay $30 for a high power 25-30 ft unit. I definitely couldn't justify $50. But for a real FLIR springboard I think $10K-15K would be more reasonable.

Exclamation

While we're fixing omissions, let's address two of them together.

FLIR and SVA (Silent Vibrating Alarm) on the same springboard, w/ the software traps to grab all outward-bound IR and audio and route it to the springboard. Put a battery in the unit. Bundle OmniRemote. Sell it for 39.95. I'd buy it.

Cool

Patience, grasshopper...

Handspring's press releases list Pacific Neotek as a developer of a springboard module. They are the makers of both the omniremote software and hardware. They have not made a formal announcement yet, but we are, afterall, still in "pre-release" for the product...

Chazzz, since you didn't seem to have any problem beaming stuff to the meeting-mate on your left, why not go the software route ... have a Hack or plug-in that is [a] tiny and [b] allows you to rotate the display 90 and 180 degrees?

Beam to the left, 180, turn the Visor around and beam to the right ... and it's done.

Whoa. In this Springboard mindset and pre-shipping Visors, have I just suggested the first software hack?

Let me know when you get it coded, and I'll beta-test it for you!

That's actually a really good idea, though you still have the inconvenience of having to turn the Visor around in your hand. Granted, it's not a big deal but it's still a deal.

What's funny is that I'm left-handed, and so I'd want to turn the machine so that my right-hand had a hold of the bottom of the machine (where the hard buttons are). That points the IR right at me! Crap!

BUT, if a more powerful, battery-packed boosted-IR Springboard came out with OmniRemote, I'll be really tempted...
