Don't get me wrong. I have ordered a Visor and am pretty certain that I will fall as madly in love with it as I have with my Palm III.

But what's with the name?

The name "Palm Pilot", aside from having that very savvy ring to it; has, in three short syllables, succeeded in getting across the fact that it is a small, handheld, electronic device designed to steer you through your chaotic life.

What does "Visor Deluxe" tell you?

With a bit of a stretch, one may imagine Handspring attempting to use a "sight" or "seeing" metaphor. But even this flies in the face of my discovery that the name is actually a contraction of "Advisor."

"Solo"? "Deluxe"?

Handspring is brimming with bright guys who could have thought of more inspired names.

Of course, trust that Visor's superior technology would make even the most rabid Palm-addict spring $250 for it, lousy as its name may be.

Franklin,

"Solo" and "Deluxe" are just the model names (much as IIIe, IIIx, V, Vx, and VII are the Palm Pilot's model names). "Visor" is actually the name of the product (if that changes your thinking at all).

"Visor" was shortened from advisor . I feel that would have been a better name . When I think of visor I feel like putting on my hat.

I like the name change. After Palm Pilot and the shortend Palm names I am glad. The fact is that there are alot of rude jokes just waiting to happen when you talke about the Palm series. I am glad I won't have to worry about mentioning that I was wasting some time playing with my Visor. There is poor connotation to "Playing with my Palm"

Would VDx make you feel better? Prol not. I don't care much about the name if the product is fantastic. That I do not know yet, but I'm certain that I won't be dissapointed since I've never even seen a PDA in my life. I think one of the local malls has some PDAs.. but they are expencive!

So, what would the next poll be like? If you got the chance to give the Visor a new name, what would you call it?

How about we call it the PalmVisor
Or how about the VisorPilot?

How about just calling it the HandSpring.

At least they picked a pretty good name for the company.

jonpod

or you could just call it the "Dee-lux" which might have some street cred

What about Ms. PALMa, Handyman.. Handyman could be:
- Handyman J(unio)r - (Solo)
- Handyman S(enio)r
- Sir Handyman - (Deluxe)

Or PocketGear..

nah.. don't think so :P

I don't think I'll like to say "I'm playing with my handspring".

Talking

I don't really care about the name if the product is good. I could be called "Lousy piece of s**t De Luxe" and I'd love it anyway if it works for what I need.

I would have preferred its original name, the Advisor. It's simple and it's logical.

hahaha Ya we are definitely acting like impatient kids the same one who would go for anything in chocolate even if it was covered with sh*t hahaha.

That leads me to another poignant question: Just how far, stunt wise, would you go to actually have a VDx in your hands now ? Would you:
1- Strip completely naked and run across your office floor?
2- go swim in a shark infested tank to retrieve a water tight Vdx?
3- Listen to one full day of Kenny J.music ?

They should have stuck with Advisor.

Thumbs up

Hey, the guy listened to his kid when naming the thing. He gets my vote for that if for no other reason. Sorta warms the cockels of my heart and makes me feel better about the company.

I could understand that. Hawkins gets my vote too for listening to his kid. In fact, my son has had a few good ideas himself and has just helped me name a product I'm launching.

It's just that when you're marketing something new, especially if it's set to compete with a very very well-entrenched leader, it's not enough to be simply feature-superior. A catchy and evocative name counts a lot, too.
