I've searched through this site and still haven't found anything concrete on using my vdx with a cell phone in the U.S.

So, I'm looking to get new cell service, probably Sprint PCS, but not sure yet.

Which cell phone and service is best to get that will allow me to connect my vdx to it either via IR port or a cable?

Or does it really matter since xircom is coming out with a wireless modem, someday. In the meantime, I'd like to use a cell phone to access email, etc....

Anyone doing this already in the U.S.? Would prefer to use the IR port...

I don't know what phone you can use the Visor with via IR but I do know that the Nokia 61XX series in the U.S. has a IR port BUT the IR port is inactive. There is nothing behind it whatsoever.

So then...its not really an IR port is it then? Heh.

Just go search on the cell phone maker's websites. As I recall they each have at least one phone with IR, but I think some may not be for US, but it should say.

Harry, have you had any luck getting this question answered? I too am looking for a wireless solution for my VDX.

Yeah, me too. I really (really) would like to be able to link this thing to a cell phone one way or another. Not only do I want to be able to access the net with my Visor, but I want to be able to tap on somebody in my phone book and have the phone dial away WITHOUT wires.

I have a feeling that we're going to have to wait for Bluetooth for this to happen.

There is a Handspring Visor cradle that has a serial port on it. The QUALCOMM Data Connectivity Kit can connect to the serial port on the cradle while your Visor is resting in the cradle. Because the Handspring Visor is a relatively new product, we have not had an opportunity to test the functionality of what I have described above. The connectivity is

IF this can work, I would consider getting the cradle-less serial connector and connecting it to the phone.

It apparently works with at least the Motorola Timeport GSM cell phone via the IR transmitter. The one I'm talking about is a multi-mode GSM phone and will work in the US and Canada. I don't think the Visor would work with other Timeports however, at least in North America. The N.A. Nokia 61xx phones do not have IR (despite the fact they look like they do.)

At least one person has claimed to have gotten a serial modem to work via the cradle, albeit not via a wireless connection. Many others have failed however.

Also, there is a diagnostics springboard out there with a serial port, but it is expensive.

As stated in a previous thread, I have been downloading my e-mail using my Sprint PCS Touchpoint with the Sprint data cable, the EFIG.com diagnostics module springboard (it has a real RS232 port) and a suitable email program like Eudora for Palm. It works great - it's actually fast since it only picks up the text - no attachments.

I forgot to mention that to use the IR one requires the IrLink software on the Visor.

rmapes, Did you say that you're using the Sprint service to do this? I just want to make sure. If it's true, I'm running out tonight to buy the cable. Please provide more details.
