I ordered my MatchBookDrive a couple of weeks back, as soon as it became available for international deliver (I live in the UK).

No confirmation was sent that the order had been received, so a a week later I sent an e-mail asking for this confirmation, which was received a coupla days later.

Yesterday it arrived in the mail. It was packaged in a fairly flimsy jiffy bag and, although the unit was un-damaged, I get the impression that if the package had received more than a moderate shock, the contents could have been affected.

The module itself has a fair amount of movement in it:

  • The front does not fix firmly to the back
  • When inserted the module moves within the springboard 'hole'
  • It's quite tricky to insert a CF card straight down so it fits over the slots, but once it's fitted it's a firm connection
  • The CF card moves forwards and backwards by around .5mm when inserted

Also the CF card sticks out the unit by about 2mm, allowing the card to be removed. I use an EB Slipper case, and the flap fits perfectly over the card.

I know most of these comments sound negative, but I actually like the MatchBookDrive, all the downsides are fairly minor and only to be expected from such a 'cutting-edge' device.

I can see this being my permanent module, replacing the ThinModem.

If someone releases a CF adapter with an amount of in-built flash memory, for the storage of FAFileMover and other stuff, I may consider changing. But for the time period I think this will answer my needs for more storage.

I have the same impression with my MD-001. I wished I had waited for the MD-100 (flush fitting CF.) I use the Rhodiana case and it was too tight a fit for my taste. I ordered the Inno Pocket CF adapter and prefer its design. My CF fits flush with the Visor and I needn't worry about ruining those connection pins on my CF or springboard. My MD-001 now sits inside the Inno Pocket box as a spare. I doubt I will ever recover the costs, but that has happened with some of my palm software too. Sometimes it's better to learn from someone else's mistakes.
