Palm is desiging PalmOS 5.0 to work on the ARM family of processors. With PalmOS and PPC compiled with the same instruction set, it would not be a huge leap to imagine PDAs that could run either OS. Is this a good or bad thing? I can't decide. Here are a few bones for you all to chew on. These thoughts are not fleshed out as I am brainstorming and writing at the same time:
Scenario I: PalmOS running in a "window" on a PPC
Upside: PPC users getting a taste of the ease of use of the PalmOS. More converts!!
Downside: PPC-ers like the increased simplicity and usability so much, that pressure is brought to bear on Palm to add "just one more PPC-like feature" to PalmOS. By the time we get to PalmOS 7, the original elegance is gone. OS 7 is really PPC with a Palm OS "skin" over it. The two sides of the PDA equation merge into one bloated system.
What do you think? Two OS's, one processor paltform. The end, or the begining?

One standard for handhelds is ideal. I think that Palm is strong enough that as long as they don't screw it up majorly, it will be the standard for simplified pdas. However, if you want to customize and ramp yours up, that option will be there. If we had one platform with a range of complexity and cusomization, yet still universally compatible, that would be ideal.
My only worry is that the microsoft part of it will lead to programming bloat.

T here's a TON of hardware issues that would need to be dealt with this for it to be do-able. In addition, most people that use PDAs have absolutely no interest in anything like 'dual booting'...they want a simple device that does functions x, y, and z.
Would it be cool? Sure. Would it be a marketable feature? Not really.
Just my opinion...

I'd bet there's quite a small percentage of people who even dual boot their PCs between Linux/Win, Win/Win, OSX/9.1, whatever... again just the hardcore (eg VC) folks would really be interested in this.

I think now that Palm will now have support for various media types, if they can do this soon enough, and keep their simplicity (something they have NO trouble doing) , it will be the end of that gawdawful PPC platform, and we'll be back to the days where 90% of all handhelds could actually beam a memo to eachother! WOW!

Hehe, I QUAD boot my system, forget about dual booting.

I tri-boot my system. It's not very impressive when you take away OSX:
1) Mac OSX (no hiccups!)
2) Mac OS9 (nearly 2 hours without any hiccups!)
3) Windows 98 (nearly 2 seconds without any hiccups!)
Course, when I boot W98, I also have Mac OS9 running with VPC. I simply can't trust ANYTHING by Microsoft.

Well, Technically I have 5 operating systems on my computer, but I only use one of them most of the time.
Windows NT 4.0
Windows 2000 (used all the time)
Windows 98
Windows 95
Linux Red Hat

I dual boot:
1) Windows 95 (slow and mean tempered)
2) Post It Notes (always reliable)

I said "small percentage," not "nobody"! I am sure quite a few people here dual boot (and once I get my new case and can stuff a third HD inside, I'll hopefully be dual booting Windows and Linux), but in the great scheme of all things, I still don't think there are many dualies out there.

BeOS? damn, talk about something of the past. Ok, ok... I know it exists in the present time. But this was supposed to be THE multimedia platform. I put it on a couple machines, and it was just missing something... oh yeah, support.

That's a good question. I didn't want to, but something went wrong with the Slot_Machine userid, and the folks that run this board could not fix it. What's puzzling is that they have ignored all of my e-mails and private messages to them. Kind of rude huh? After a few days, I just created another id. Great board otherwise....

No offense, but what's the point? Why would you take the time to instal each of those OS' on your computer when you will only be using each for a small amount of time. It sounds like you only did it because you could. That makes no sense.
