Question AvantGo through VFS with VDx & Matchbook???

I've been searching other forums to find the answer, but I've been unsuccessful. The bottom line is that I've gotten the VFS beta to work pretty well with my Visor (not just FAFileMover, but VFS programs as well), but my next challenge is trying to see if I can store AvantGo pages in my CF card (I'd be saving almost 2 MB of space) and still run Avantgo. I have the feeling that I'll have to wait until AvantGo comes out with a version that allows storage on a card, but their support page says that it's possible (it's vague, so I'm not sure what exactly it's supposed to mean - go to

http://avantgo.com/support/mobile_s...s2.html#1306071

I guess the easy answer would be to just cut down on the number of channels, but the reason I want to know is that ever since I got my Matchbook drive (4 days now), I've been finding out how much potential it has even for older (i.e. Solo, VDx) Visors. It may be just a matter of waiting for the proper software to come out. For clarification, I have the following hardware and software for VFS functionality:

Visor Deluxe
Matchbook M-001
32 meg SanDisk CF
Launcher III v2.3b2
VFSHelper beta6 (w/ FALib 1.5.5)

So far I've gotten the following programs to work without problems:

Hackmaster (w/ Afterburner, FlipHack, GreenLight, DaLauncher)
Mapopolis (although it's very slow, even with Afterburner)
Adobe Acrobat read (again, very slow)
gMovie
BackupBuddyVFS:Free (v1.01, NOT v1.1)
BDicty

Software with crashes/problems:

BackupBuddyVFS:Free v1.1
TrueTerm v1.2 (works, although VFS error message keeps popping up)

I found most of the answers on how to make VFS run on a VDx on the VC discussion forums and the softwares' readme.txt, but if anyone with a VDx (you OS 3.5.1 users have it too easy with PowerRUN and MSMount )) wants to do the same, feel free to write.

Finally, kudos to Dave at Kopsis and Keith at Matchbook. I think they've put a lot of effort into their products. I guess I could've avoided some headaches and gotten the MemPlug, but the part of me that watched too much "MacGyver" and "A-Team" as a kid has a soft spot for guys that build things from the ground up on their own time (not that people at MemPlug haven't, but I'm the kind of guy that roots for the underdog). Thanks guys.

All the support page is saying is that you can keep the Avantgo application on a flash card. Your channels, however (which are the big RAM eater), have to stay in the Visor's RAM. Hopefully the folks at Avantgo are working on a new release with VFS support. If ever there was an app than needed a "disk drive", Avantgo is it

Thanks, Dave. That's what I thought, but judging from what you've said about VFS on other forums, the possibility of AvantGo being able to make the program store the channels in flash while still being able to sync through the desktop seems slim. What do you think?

John

It can theoretically be done, but it's certainly "non-trivial" (engineer speak for "a lot of work"). If Avantgo decides to tackle this problem, it will be very interesting to see how they go about it

I am also using a VDX. PowerRun is running great on my VDX.

Really, what version? I thought VFS beta only worked for OS v3.5 or above. You haven't had any problems on your Visor Deluxe?

I am using the newest 1.1.b3 verion PowerRun on my VDX. Try it, it's really great for some database program not supporting VFS natively. I use PowerRun with MetrO and MobileDB Lite(this version only can read database, not edit them).

Thanks, I'll try it out. By the way, has anyone downloaded Dave Kessler's new beta (#7) for the VFSHelper? He just posted it on the 5th, and I downloaded and tried it out, but it keeps crashing my Visor when I enable the VFS program. I just went back to my old version. Too bad... it automatically starts VFSHelper if I reset. If anyone's tried his new one, let me know if you have any problems as well (just my luck). Thanks.

I don't have any problem on the newest VFSHelper. I don't use the "enable after reset" function though.

Arrow Beta8

Beta8 fixes the major problems in beta7. Download it and try it for yourself.

Memplug and avantgo

I have a memplug with PiDirect and VFS helper. I have AvantGo and the channels loaded on the memplug and have no problem accessing them directly via PiDirect. Memplug is very cool.

If I remember correctly, PiDirect can only be used on read-only database. Could you hotsync your AvantGo channels correctly when you have ALL your AvantGo program and associated channel files on Memplug? I also remember PiDirect will be disabled when you hotsync.
Also the problem here is the hotsync, not about running AvantGo on external memory and reading channels. I can put my AvantGo on my CFA and use it without any problem. It just won't sync correctly.

To be honest, I'm not sure how I did it and I don't have my Visor on me at the moment as I am at the office on an impromptu basis. Initially, I moved everything with AvantGo in the title to the memplug. When I started avantgo, it would take me to the homepage, but then freeze. I then moved all but one of the databases ou of the smart media card (I think I left somthing that said channels in the title) and tried again and it worked. I have hotsynched without problems. I will post more info when I get my hands on my visor.
