I spent 2 months in Taiwan on business. I dined on dog and sea slugs in brown sauce...mmmmm.

Yes. By quite a few federal statutes. But what happened was an accident and I felt that leaving the bird laying there in the road only to be run over by more cars was going to be even more disrespectful than eating it. Besides - it broke my grill!

Technically I can't have a feather from that bird in my posession. Nor can you have a bluebird, robin, or even seagull feather. However you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a conservation officer in NY willing to enforce those laws to the fullest extent. The reason for that is so that when a poacher is caught they can be really hit hard. My understanding is that most people would be told to get rid of any feathers from a protected bird (all but rock dove, starling, and 1 other that I can't remember right now). In my case I was willing to risk the fines for eating roadkill rather than go hungry.

I think that if people had to eat the animals that they ran over in their vehicles then you'd have a lot fewer dogs, cats, squirrels, and frogs fatally wounded by cars. Then again, in my area, you'd have a lot of cars injured in the "taking" of deer.

I don't think that I have ever eaten anything that could be considered weird, but about a month ago I did eat gum that was 12 years old. Explanation: My husband is a sports card collector and he got some old wax packs for Christmas. I wasn't paying attention to what he was doing and he came into the kitchen and asked if I wanted some gum. I, like a dummy, took it and stuck it in my mouth and chewed it. I almost BARFED. I don't think I can ever think if anything that tasted so horrible. Even though he almost lost his manhood, he thought it was pretty comical.

IIRC the main one is the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Although birds are one of my passions, I don't begrudge you eating a bird (even a Sharpie) that you accidentally killed.

Just a minor correction to this, but sweetbreads (BTW one of my favorite dishes) [ in French - ris de veau ] are the pancreas (sp) from veal not any type of brains.

Probably the most different thing I've ever eaten is fugu or blowfish when I was in Japan. The toxin is fatal even in small amounts and at the time there were only about 15 chefs licensed in all of Japan who could serve it. They try to leave just enough of the toxin, a neuro-toxin, to give you a buzz but not enough to kill you. It was delicious though. Completely illegal here in the US unless it has been frozen which kills the toxin.

Not on purpose: unidentified bug at 60 mph. (I almost threw up, but thought that would taste worse)

On purpose: live lizard (during a joint Service field exercise) or the "worm" (many times).

I haven't eaten anything particularly "weird" (although my husband cringes when I put home grown tomatoes on my grits) but I have enjoyed this thread.

Freshly removed raw goat kidney: masai delicacy
Chitlin's (goat innards): Kikuyu delicacy
live termites(flying and terrestrial): lizard delicacy
roasted termites: kenyan delicacy
a few others including bugs swallowed while on bicycles and motorcycles (termites mentioned above not included in these scenarios)

I don't know about Kikuyu, but here in South Carolina:

Check out the Chitlin' Strut's web page here . In South Carolina, every small town has some festival (Irmo has the Okra Festival; Batesburg-Leesville has the Poultry Festival; Springfield is the Home of the Governor's Frog Jump; et cetera, ad infinitum). The Chitlin Strut just happens to be the grossest.

When I was a kid, I use to have to make the grossest sandwiches for my Dad. It still makes me gag today when I think about it.

It isn't very exotic but his favorite sandwich was peanut butter and mayonaise - about a half-inch thick layer of each on white bread. Talk about a heart attack waiting to happen! YUCK!

I remember reading an article about one of Elvis's favorite treats called "Fools Gold Loaf". It involved a loaf of french bread sliced lengthway and slathered in peanut butter...slits were then cut across the top of the loaf, and filled with bacon...the crust was then brushed with bacon fat and the whole concoction was baked.

Apparently the "late" (and I emphasize late) King would have these made by his favorite restaurant in Memphis and flown around the world to whereever he was performing.

Man, he really knew how to live.

I don't indulge in too many exotic dishes, but if anyone here watches The Travel Channel you may have seen this.

The "Lonely Planet" TV show had a special episode called the world food guide or something like that where they compiled the strangest delicacies form various episodes, such as:

sheep's eyeballs
live ants
pig uterus
whale
