the predictions in that article were so poor I couldn't even find it in my heart to respond to it in the thread... The fact that there were so many things to attack told me that anyting I had to say would be lost upon the author.

i think...

I believe the writers/readers of palminfocenter are pro Palm/Sony...and NOT for Handspring. I also think that the reason why they dont like Handspring is because their business was built upon the foundation Palm once had. Handspring revolutionized the industry of handheld computers with their Springboard expansion slot and non-handspring users dont like that. Even though we get a little jelous of their hi-res screens...were the ones that can add 3 different digital cameras, 2 cellular phones, unlimited amounts of memory, an mp3 player and a kazillion GPS systems to our Handspring Visor.
With that said, my conclusion is as follows: A little jelousy of our "Visors" doesnt hurt us, it hurts them.

Thanks...
(yeah i know my paragraph skills are off, shut up its still vacation!)

Cane's essay is more of a personal wish list than an objective look ahead at the coming year (e.g., there won't be any microdrives in PDAs), but he may have a point about Handspring "abandoning" Springboards, even if he overstates the case.

Handspring now has two product lines: the Visor and the Treo. It would be more accurate to say that if the Treo critical masses in the way the Hawkins and Colligan believe it will, that product line will become the company's new center of gravity. But the Visor series certainly won't be dropped.

As Hawkins stated in his Comdex keynote, any handheld (including the Visor) can be made smaller, even if it looks like it's reached its point of maximum miniaturization.

I wouldn't be so quick to disagree. I have YET to buy an overpriced Springboard component. And trust me, I will find any excuse to spend needless money on electronics. I have *almost* bought a backup module. Everything that I think about buying (ie: MP3 players, digital cams, and yes, even that Audible thing) just don't seem to measure up to what I'd be paying for the thing. No Springboard Modules should cost over $50, except for the modems, maybe. Why would I want to buy a module for a price that is higher than what my Visor is worth now, a Visor which I will only upgrade or dump in 6 months??

I truly think that the form factors will become tighter, more integrated, and smaller. Not smaller in the sense that screens will become smaller, but I think the bulky Springboard cams, modems, etc, will be on their way out within a year. What with the new sleek and minimal Clie, who would want a hunk o' plastic hanging out their sexy new pda?

Well I got news for you. The Sleek and Minimal Clie's peripherals will be an eyesore. There is no way any developer is going to be able to make decent peripherals that doesn't have a big hangout. Have you seen the camera that was released for it? Have you seen the ugly wireless thingy for the older Clies? I still think that the Springbord is the way to go. No need to worry about bulky sleds or the peripheral breaking off becaused the base (memory stick) is too thin.

Thumbs down Prediction nohing more than a wish list

The so called prediction is nothing more than Mike Cane's wish list. Note the pro-Sony/Por-Mac bias in his "predictions".

I like palminfocenter better than pdabuzz.com. pdabuzz seems to be run by sony, When the page loads up the first thing you see is a sony clie ad, in every page there is a sony ad or link, pdabuzz sucks

I don't think Cane himself believes that the Springboard is a failure -- I think he's saying that HandSpring has decided it is. From things I've heard quoted from various HandSpring personnel in the trades, Mike may be right.

As to the future, I think the question is not whether HandSpring gives up on the SpringBoard standard, but whether they give up on Visors (in preference to the Treo.) Given the good word-of-mouth the Treo's been getting from the press, that may be a good business decision.

Speaking as a HandSpring customer who has no interest in wireless connectivity for my PDA... I'm glad Sony's making the Clie. (Me Want T615.)
