Unhappy

Abandon all hope (for your Visors) those of you who get a fatal error with a message that reads “Memory MgrNew.c,Line:4128 Invalid handle”. According to HS tech support this is an error which has their engineers mystified and their recommendation is to declare the unit “Dead on Arrival” and send it back for a replacement.

My Visor has just started doing the same thing. What's worse is when I perform a hard reset, it just stays there on the Splash(boot)screen. Completely frozen. I can't even shut it off. First it has a crooked screen, and now this. This thing has been an absolute piece of s***! I still haven't cancelled my other order(s), but I certainly hope that I just got one bad unit. If any of the other Visors I ordered show the same problems, I sending them back and upgrade to Palm Vx.

Red face

Pardon my ignorance, but this sounds like a software issue and not a hardware issue. Am I mistaken on this?

If my thinking, that it is a software issue, (i.e. OS) is correct, then all Visor's are DOA according to this comment from Handspring. At this point I don't believe all that is coming out of the mouths of those answering the phones at Handspring, and I hope this is nothing more than another incorrect rumor.

Having said that, I have run into this problem a time or two already with my Visor, but each time removing an apparently offensive program (and geting a different version of same) has solved the looping resets. This hasn't been a shock to me as this is a "new" version of the OS.

I'm no techie here, so someone let me know if I'm all wet on this issue.

Tyler:
What I stated in my post was the information given to me by HS tech support and not "my way of thinking" (I certainly hope tech support is more competent that their call center). I was told that the HS engineers were aware of this problem and were, at this time, not sure what to do to fix it.
I "upgraded" from a PalmIIIx and the applications I installed on the Visor were the same that worked without a problem on my Palm. Disabling the hacks does not solve the problem.
I cannot sync with my desktop Mac (which would not be a great problem had I received my 8MB springboard) and opening some applications (HanDbase to name one) results in a fatal error requiring a soft reset.
I used my Visor for a week without this problem (although it would take several minutes for the synchronization process to begin) and have not installed any new applications or hacks.
So, a software problem appears to be unlikely and given the fact that (according to tech support) I am not the first to call them regarding this fatal error message, I think that some of us unfortunately have received a "lemon" Visor.

mg,

My apologies. I certainly didn't intend to imply that you were thinking wrongly. You were only relaying Handsprings comments.

I too hope there tech support is more competent than the call center, but I have spoken to my fair share of incompetent tech supporters. (Not at Handspring. I've not called Handspring tech support.)

I too upgraded from a IIIx, and I blame some of my troubles on that. I have BackupBuddy, and I didn't go through the backup directory to remove some of the files that shouldn't have been installed on the Visor. (Examples: OS update 3.1.1, dshack v. 2.1<---this one I didn't know about until after the fact anyway.) Also, I recently upgraded to the newest release of BugMe! and it seemed to conflict like crazy with some hack (and/or OS 3.1H) I've got installed. I got the endless loop nightmare, and it could only be remedied by hard reset and not reinstalling either EVPlugged Base or the new version of BugMe! With the previous version of BugMe! all is now well (with EVPlugged installed).

Unlike yourself, I have had no sync-ing problems, but I am using a PC and that may make a difference.

Well, sure hope this all gets sorted out, and no one has a lemon. Man, I hate to think of having to return this baby in light of the current order snafu's. (I feel fortunate enough to have gotten this one without incident. I'd hate to push my luck.)

Hi guys,
I also seem to have had some trouble, with fatal error, or my Visor would freeze when I did a reset from Hackmaster. Only hard re-boot would remedy the situation. I had Bugme ver 2.72 installed, I took it off and everything seems ok now, except that applications running with hackmaster don't work. When I tap on DA launcher, it brings me to the hackmaster extension screen instead of the application. Anybody Know what could be wrong here. I tried re-installing and it does the same thing.
Tylor where can I get an older copy of Bugme. This is my first PDA so I don't have any old programs.
Thanks

I too got this message once. While using launcher III I hit the menu button then Apps then Memory/Launcher. Boom I got the error. All I did was do a soft reset and have never had the problem again. And I have tried to replicate it. I am upgrading from a Palm Pilot Personal so I am still trying to get use to not having a memory Icon. Is there a way to get to the delete screen without exiting the Launcher app?

Peace
Bryan

Frankly, I wouldn't have expected ANYTHING relating to Hackmaster or OS patch level applications to work properly. All we've been guaranteed is that the API calls will still work and that the processor uses the same instruction set. Significant pieces of the OS have been completely altered.

Question

Launcher III had a recent new version release with a crytic mention of a looping reset bug as part of the fix in the new version. Could this be a common thread with the error message? (meaning, having launcher III installed) I have updated to the new version and have since had no trouble, but that has only been a day or two now.

Legacy,
http://hausofmaus.com may keep older versions available for dowload. If not, I have it and would be glad to e-mail it to you. Just click on my user profile, drop me a request e-mail, and I'll hit reply and attach the older version of the program.

Legacy,

You don't happen to work for Handspring do you? You misspelled my name exaclty as Handspring did -- Tylor. (J/K)(Fortunately, my credit card accepted it and I got my Visor on schedule with no hassles.)

I do not think that the use of Launcher III is the common thread. I use Launch'Em and it (along with all the other applications and hacks I had used without any problems on my Palm IIIx) worked well until I started to get these recurring fatal error messages on Saturday. I can no longer delete or beam applications or data and have not been able to sync since Saturday.

No...specifically BugMe broke my Visor. I had to hard reset. I know have LauncherIII reinstalled (sans BugMe) and everything works great.

I have the following hacks installed:
Battery Meter
AfterburnerII
Silence
Menu

None of them have caused me trouble.

Arrow

I had a similar error when I tried to HotSync. It was immediately after I installed a few new apps:

ControlPanelIII
Scorched Earth
Kyle's Quest

I deleted them and now it works fine. I'll have to figure out later which program messed it up. Just as with the Palms, it seems that 3rd party apps can mess it up sometimes. It's generally the fault of the 3rd party and not the OS.

Thanks Tyler. but I will wait since I am still having some other problems. Hackmaster is installed but apps like DA Launcher don't work with it any more it is checked on the hackmaster screen but there is no icon to launch or have access to it. Was working before. Anybody have this problem? Tried asking the author, but he is stumped.

Exclamation

if you guys would remeber from the pppro days. all these errors are common.
it's funny how ppl don't complain half as much about win9x BSOD as much as they do about there PDA's.

if you encounter memory line errors. do the following.

pull the batteries out(and prey you have backups of you data)
then press the reset button on the back.
now wait 5 mins.

this will reset the palm back to it's factory state. or

turn the unit off
then press and hold the power button for 1 minute ignoring the start screen. let go.
you should see a msg saying erase all data(or words to that effect)
say yes. and it will do the same.

this is an ongoing bug with the palm OS since v1.0/2.0/3.0 and prob 4.0 when it arives.
