I have had to perform a couple of soft resets, and each time I lose ALL Data. From what I have read in the user guide this is not supposed to happen. Please tell me why it does, do I have a defective VDX?

"Soft reset.
A soft reset is a reset that "reboots" your Visor. Perform a soft reset by sticking a paper clip in the hole at the mid right side of the Visor when looking at it from the back. Or you soft reset from some programs and dialogue boxes. There isn't any data loss with a soft reset, but you'll have to reactivate any installed hacks."

I understand needing to reactivate my hacks but I lose EVERYTHING: Launcher, Data bases, Addresses, Games, EVERYTHING. I'm ready to go back to a paper PIM.

If you're not holding down any buttons when you reset, then it sounds like you have a bad VDX.

One final thing to try: a hard reset. After that, load one thing on and try the soft reset again. If it still loses everything, contact customer service.
