Question

My only dissapointment w/my VDx so far is that there is a lot of screen glare. I'm always twisting the damn thing all over the place.
Does anyone know if WriteRights or any other screen covering item will cut the glare down? As it stands now, I sure don't need to download "Mirror"!

Thumbs up

WriteRights cut glare big time. It gives a nice, satiny finish, but you'll lose a little clarity also. I think screen protection and glare reduction are worthy trade offs though.

I have to agree it cuts down glare in a big way. I've made myself cross eyed trying to cut it by turning it and such, but the protective screen is textured in a way to eliminate a good deal of reflective light. The glare eliminated is many many times more than the clarity change.

Yesterday I got a Palm IIIx to give as an xmas gift, and I opened it (hehe) and I thought Handspring's visor was pure sh!t before, but my god, after seeing the IIIx stylus I see why everyone is throwing a fit.

If you get a screen protector for ANY reason, get it to save your screen from being RUINED by the cheap ass stylus Handspring gives you (I've put a few deep scratches in already).

Wink

man...everyone knocks the Visor stylus. I guess I don't mind it so much, because I'm a former Palm Pilot user, and the stylus for these two are virtually the same kind of "stick". You can scratch your screen with the help of any stylus if the tip gets dented or if there is debris between the screen and stylus tip. I did it myself to my first Palm Pilot. It wasn't the stylus' fault, but my own. I deformed the stylus tip without knowing it.

The Palm III changed everything, and from then on new PDA users considered the III stylus as the benchmark. ...ya kids are spoiled!

Imagine this: USRobotics used to give away a FREE STYLUS (plastic stick) to every Palm Pilot user who registered their unit! What a gift!

Sorry for the OT.

Ragamuffin:

I think my main issue w/ the stylus is that it arrived defective. The ridge around the tip of the stylus was bound to scratch the screen as soon as you made a screen stroke at a certain angle. It sounds like several other people's styli were the same. I smoothed out the ridge and haven't put any new scratches on the screen since.

As for the actual design of the stylus, it ain't that bad. They just need to keep an eye on quality control to avoid that sharp ridge.

Wow. How high is the ridge?! I looked at my stylus and concluded that in order for the ridge to even touch the writing surface, it would have to be held at a 20 degree angle. That's pretty shallow. Effectively that's like holding the stylus almost flat against the screen. I guess that isn't a problem for me because I hold my stylus like a pen. But I know others who do hold their stylus at a shallow angle. But maybe my stylus' ridge is not as high as others'.

(Going further off-topic, I think I remember that there is a right way to make stylus tips. A friend bought the very first Newton ever made, and I think the stylus tip was polished to a glossy-smooth finish--completely unlike the Visor stylus tip. I doubt he ever had a problem with scratching his screen.)

elfbomber,

That's what I'm using in mine. I had leftovers, and I tried one on without even thinking about it. But it was, luckily for me, about the same size. It comes up a mm or so short on the width, but it's nothing really noticable. Only if you really scrutinize the size diff.

I think I remember reading somewhere that the CE device writerights fit just right. Does any one know if this is true or not? I am expecting to receive my Vdx this week, my CC was charged last Friday!!, but I am almost scared to use it since I don't want to scratch the screen. Thanks for the input.

ConceptKitchen, the WriteRight vendor, recommended Palm III Writerights. I have bought a set of those and installed one. There is a very small gap on the sides but it's a pretty good fit.

I have changed my mind regarding Writerights. I had tried them on my PalmPilot but did not like them there as too much screen clarity was lost. The screen is so good on the Visor and the Writerights have improved somewhat. I now recommend Writerights.

I just installed my first WriteRight on my Visor (actually it's my second, I practiced on the first). I bought the PDA Survival Kit and it came with 4 ea. WriteRights in 3 sizes. The one I used is actually marked for Palm III and Windows CE devices. I think there was a smaller size for Psion and a larger one for the full-size CE devices with the horizontal screens.

I can't say exactly what the different sizes are for because ConceptKitchen has this deal that if you send back the WriteRights that are not for your particular application, they will send you 12 more of the WriteRights that you kept; unfortunately you have to send back the packaging which includes the details.

The WriteRight fits perfectly in the vertical and is just a smidgen narrow on the horizontal (we're talking about 1/32" per side). This is not a negative, but rather a godsend since it allows some leeway in installing the thing. Otherwise, it's like trying in put a postage stamp exactly on top of another postage stamp.

My first reaction is I don't like it. There is definite reduced clarity and a whistling sound as the stylus passes over the surface that I could do without. After a while, however, I found out that it just may be worth using.

It turns out that with so many threads talking about the ease that the Visor screen gets scratched (dirt on the screen, crappy stylus, soft screen, etc.) I was being too tentative when I wrote. I thought that every stroke was a potential scar on my screen. So I made more mistakes. With the WriteRight in place, I can now write with reckless abandon safe in the knowledge that my screen is protected. I am now so much more accurate and faster that I am willing to overlook the downsides of the WriteRights.

Exclamation

Since I don't have the Visor yet I went and pre-bought some Windows CE WrightRights.
What is the Visor screen size?

If it helps at all these seem to measure
2 5/16 Horizontal and 3 1/16 vertical.
I think that is accurate. I was measuring from a paper template I cut out so I wouldn't have to carry the actual one around.

Do you think it will fit correctly? If not I will take them back to best Buy.
