well............

In theory, if you have an internet comunication line open then, yes PQA's will work, however you need OS 3.5 or greater inorder to have them run right, the curent Visors run an upgraded version of OS 3.1, so Not right now

When the next two visors Come out (prisim and platnum) then PQA's will work with the VisorPhone (and CDMA version), as well as any other modem.

Hope this helps, I have had a major case of the stupids today, so I might not be very understandable.

Angry

Well that settles it (for me) If the visor isn't going to support PQA's then it's really not worth it to me to spend so much money on a wireless connection for it. I mean there are hundreds of these applications available and we aren't going to be able to use any of them because of the visor's old OS version.

As soon as I'm looking for a wireless pda I'm going to look elsewhere. Sorry handspring you blew it!

It's interesting that handspring's page doesn't say anything about PQA's... even in their faq. I would think that this would be a pretty frequently asked question... Maybe they didn't want to scare people away.

Handspring's 3.1H3 doesn't support PQAs but that doesn't mean that Handspring can't patch it to add that capability when the VisorPhone module hits the streets. The constant whining about the Visor not having PalmOS in Flash is getting a little tiresome. Handspring can, and will patch the OS via RAM patches or module ROMs with whatever functionality they deem usefull. If PQAs are that important to people, then they should sit down and write a polite email to Handspring telling them why PQA support would be of value to them and how it would increase the likelyhood of them purchasing the VisorPhone.

Question

Please bear with my stupidity, but what advantage do PQAs have over real-time browsing (which I believe the VisorPhone supports over a 14.4 wireless connection)?

I always thought people hated web-clipping. What does it give that real-time wireless web access does not?

Thanks for educating one of the clueless.

My understanding is (and please correct me if I'm wrong) that the problem is not so much that PQAs can do things which you cannot do by web browsing; it's more that many useful PQAs already exist which real-time browsers cannot access. If the VisorPhone permitted access to PQAs, a lot of conversion work could be avoided.

Couldn't PQAs be accessed via some sort of proxy. Similar to using AvantGo to get web content on my Visor. Wouldn't it be possible to have something resising on a desktop system that I would dial into and sync up with?

Also, what are the limitations of OS 3.1 that cause PDQ's to not work? Could this functionality be emulated or replaced by a well written piece of Palm software?

PQA's are Palm Query Apps -- special programs that are designed for accessing limited web content from a wireless connection with a Palm OS device (i.e. the Palm VII). They can be very convenient -- looking up local movie showings consists of opening the appropriate PQA, entering your ZIP code, and clicking on a theater, rather than messing around on the internet, but are disliked by some since they provide "web clipping," rather than true web browsing. Whatever; I don't think PQA support is gonna make or break the VisorPhone.
