Question

I'm about to take a plunge and buy my first PDA. I have a limited budget so I won't be buying another one for quite some time. Therefore, I spent a considerable amount of time researching the likely candidates for my purchase, as I didn't want to suffer down the road due to an unwise decision.

I flirted with the idea of a PPC, and seriously considered blowing my budget on a Vx, and but after much ado, I settled on a VPL. Despite some drawbacks, I felt that the Platinum was the best choice given my constraints and the current PDA landscape.

However, after perusing the posts here at VisorCentral, I'm wondering if it would be wiser for me to wait until February/March, when "Palm will be unveiling a completely redesigned V series that will be available with a color display and a MMC expansion slot for extra memory" (foo fighter). In addition, I've heard that Palm/HS are planning on eventually migrating from the Dragonball processor altogether.

I would appreciate any feedback or advice, particularly regarding upcoming product releases from HS, Palm and even TRGPro (or god forbid PPC). After all, the last thing I want to do is get caught with an obsolete device, or at least one near the end of it's life cycle.

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to post this in the Prism/Platinum Forum as well

If you need/want a PDA now you really can't go wrong with the Visor Platinum. It blows away anything that is out today. Just like computers there will always be something better and faster just over the horizon, so if you wait until the new models come out you may wait again becaue you heard about the next new models coming out.

Since your budget seems to be about $400 (you considered the Palm Vx) here is what I would suggest:

Visor Platinum $250 at Amazon with coupon code mentioned in other threads.
YadaYada Minstrel S Wireless IP modem $150

-$50 rebate from HS/YadaYada (not mentioned but the card is in the box) when you buy a modem and the Platinum/prism

Total cost: $350 and you have something better than any Palm out there.

If you find PPCs too expensive, you can bet the a color Palm V with expandable memory will be no different. I'd expect it to be around $500.

Correction. The new Palms will support the Smart Media (SM)
cards, not the MMC (MultiMedia Card).

Huh? Where did you hear that? I think you are confusing SM (Smart Media) with SD (Secure Digital). SD is a special format of MMC, that offers encryption or digital signatures. This will prevent pirating of ebooks, MP3s, and so forth.

If you have some new information on Palm moving to Smart Media, please post the info here. But as far as I know, Palm is still giving the green light to MMC.

Cheers!
