Looking for Wireless Internet

Hoy hoy. I have a visor edge and I have been trying to look for some method of wireless internet access. How could I do it? I looked at omnisky and the visorphone. Are there any other options??? Frankly, with all these fees after fees buying the hardware, activation, minutes, non-minutes, goblins and gnomes, it doesn't seem very practical to have wireless internet.

wireless internet

Hey, i have the Minstrel S springboard Yada Yada edition, that i got for 30 something bucks off UBID.COM.

I called up verizon wireless and found about their wireless internet plans for the Palm. Its 25 dollar a month, for 12 months, and they give you unlimited service within their area (www.verizonwireless.com has a map). Its REALLY usefull, to talk to friends on AIM and AOL and i like it alot.

Much cheaper than omnisky or yada yada, but you pay when you roam in the ATT network, which doesnt mean much to me.

Verizon and ATT use different technologies. Verizon uses CDMA. ATT uses TDMA. How come you can roam in the ATT network with Verizon Wireless?

The TDMA vs. CDMA is only on their cellphones. AT&T and Verizon use the same thing for the wireless internet. Yada Yada actually uses both networks depending on where you're located.

So I can use a Yada Yada modem (Minstrel S springboard) to connect to both networks (Verizon and ATT)? I cannot understand this. Please educate me. We have both Verizon and ATT here but I don't think Yada Yada's service is covered here. (Penn State, ZIP code 16801). Is there a stand alone product for wireless internet connection from Verizon or ATT? I only know you can connect through a cellular phone via IR or cable. BTW, what's the standard Verizon, ATT, and Minstrel S springboard using?

Is there anyway to tell if you're roaming or to tell the unit not to work when it's roaming? Otherwise this sounds like a very good deal to me.

I'm using YadaYada for my Deluxe in Houston. I recently got a Deluxe for my wife and ordered the VisorPhone.

As you know the VisorPhone is free with activation. I activated it on the Nationwide plan of 300 minutes for $40/month. What I like about it is that you can surf/e-mail/instant message with the VisorPhone (as long as you use a dialup ISP) AND use it as a phone. Since we both travel for work, this comes in handy for both of us.

I haven't used the YY Modem as much as I thought I would, plus it's a little buggy. I have to soft reset it every time I use it. I don't think VisorPhone has any compatibility problems.

If you think you'll use your wireless more than 300 minutes/month, then go for the Minstrel S. Otherwise, the VisorPhone is a great deal and practical too.

Mike

Can't Contact Verizon

I can't find info at the verizon website about that amazing wireless deal, or even a phone number. It sounds perfect! Can you provide me with more info Dave (Drakion)? Perhaps a way to contact verizon?7

So they are using CDPD instead of going through their CDMA or ATT's TDMA network. It looks a nice deal to me except my area is not covered. Is there a similar deal from ATT?

I am answering my own question. I found out a similar plan from ATT. It's slitely higher than Verizon. It costs $29.99 per month. But the roaming charges from ATT is cheaper. It's 5 cents/Kbyte. Verizon charges 8 cents/Kbytes for roaming. I think it all downs to who covers your area. My area is only covered by ATT so I have no choice at all.
BTW, the ATT page is here:

Now I have several questions to ask. As we know only Yada Yada's software is compatible with Visor Deluxe. Omnisky is not. Does anybody know whether Verizon's and ATT's softwares are compatible with Visor Deluxe or not? Do they use their own softwares? So I have to use their email account and browse through their site? Could I use other email accounts? Could I use it like a regular isp (connect to any email account I have and browse any site I want to)? Thanks a lot.

Verizon not near, ATT is

Well, as much as I would love for Verizon to be in my area, it really isn't. ATT is and, like mentioned previously, is slightly higher. What I, the simple palm user, finds confusing is the hardware. I have a visor edge. What hardware do I need (such as a modem I would presume) and why is the Visor Deluxe being considered to need something different than the other models?

Visor Deluxe has Palm OS 3.1. Others have Palm OS 3.5. OS 3.1 is much inferior than OS 3.5. I think the only hardware you need (actually you have no other choice) is the Minstrel S Springboard module modem for the purpose this thread is intended to.

The visor deluxe has some radio frequency interference issues. Later models such as the Prism, Platinum, etc. do not. I believe YY and HS had (have?) a program where you could trade in your Deluxe for a Deluxe that had the RF problem corrected. However, this RF optimized will still not work with Omnisky since their browser requires OS 3.3.

Also, I would recommend that if you plan on keeping the Minstrel for at least a year, you consider going with Omnisky since their one-year prepaid plan comes out to $29.99/month and you get unlimited roaming at no additional charge no matter who's network you are on! Whatever you do, stay away from YY! That company is not looking very stable these days...
