Unhappy can't hotsync with win2k

I have a vdx and am trying to set up a hotsync with a new computer with win2k installed. I tried everything detailed in the earlier posts but still no luck.

I have switched between my two USB ports and have uninstalled and reinstalled everything (Handspring, that is). When the computer detects the cradle in the USB port, it starts to install it, then I get: "An error occurred during the installation of the device. The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance." Then it tells me to click Finish.

Any recommendations on what I should do now? I am approaching severe desperation. Thx IA.

SKyman...

I did everything you did but the hard reset... you think that is the key to solving the HOT sync issue?

I would say no to the hard reset unless you have to. If you have a backup module, it is a no brainer. Do it. I have restored w/o the module and not everything gets restored, but with the module, it is an exact image. But, what you can do instead (keep in mind I am no expert), you could remove a program at a time until it works. If there is some type of registry for the visor, then it might not make a difference. I don't know if there is one. I think there must be one, because how was I able to restore from my backup and it worked? If what I said was true about an exact image, then it shouldn't have worked.

If you don't have a backup module, I would definitely recommend one. There is the "Backup Module" which is what I have for 39.95 and the "Hagiwara Backup & 8MB Flash Module" for 94.95. You should at least get the cheaper one.

If you don't have the module, then make sure you still have all of your software and any reg codes for any shareware you have bought.

Good luck.

Oh, one more thing. When I referred to PD4, I was talking about "Palm Desktop", not the Palm OS 4 which IS NOT compatible with Visor.

wkm,

I would do what I have mentioned above. If you are still having problems or are reluctant to do so, go buy a serial cradle. I got a combo one that has a switch for USB/RS232(Serial) which came in very handy during my depression, when I couldn't figure it out either.

Angry resets, etc. have not worked 4 me

I guess I am going to have to get the serial cradle (which totally bites ). None of the fixes above have worked for me, including the hard reset. Thanx anyway.

Try this Solution
Make sure HS Manager is running
Go to the device manager and try the hotsync than, you should see a new device appear, rightclick on it and reinstall drivers pointing to the location where palm desktop is installed. In the case you dont see the new device pop up. If you want to save your self some time buy a serial craddle.

trg,

What email client do you use? Did you ever reinstall your Hot Sync software?

Wink getting Desktop to work with W2000

Spoke with the Handspring super-guru yesterday (the first two generic gurus couldn't cut it).

Seriously, they suggested that I go through all the above (except the hard reset) (uninstall hardware Handspring USB (go to Device Manager to make sure nothing was hanging around), uninstall Palm Desktop and Conduit), reboot, then do a search for anything Palm AND Visor and delete it, then reinstall. It appears that there was an old Visor.dll file from the Win98 days that was goofing things up.

I am sure you all thought of this, but I apparently didn't do it all together, so something was sneaking through.

Thanx to all for your suggestions and to HS too (finally). (Now if I can just get HS to cancel the ^&!$ serial cradle order.)

BTW, there's a FAQ and link to the VisorUSBRegClean.exe utility here.

Angry Hardware prob can stop USB sync too

My VDX stopped synching via USB after I dropped it from 3 feet onto industrial carpet. I went through the steps suggested it this thread just to be sure, but when they didn't help, I opened the case. Sure enough a component, Y1, fell out . I'm way out of warranty and w/o a protection plan.
I've found a local computer repair shop that can do surface-mount touch-ups, so I'm hoping they can replace it and I'll be all set.

BTW - if you are interested, I did a little web research: Y1 appears to be a 6Mhz crystal oscilator. Apparantly the USB standard is somehow based on a 6Mhz frequency. Without the crystal, my VDX could no longer "speak" USB.

UPDATE: I just got back from the repair shop and I am now able to hotsync with USB!!
