Platinum Upgrade

Hi all... Well I've finally upgraded from my VDX to a VPL (graphite)..
I had everything backed up on the module and PC... When I got the Platinum I couldnt wait to get home so I restored from the module. It seemed ok but acted a little strange - some waiting when going to menus. Also, I have to Graffiti's in the 'Category', info, etc.. one is 3.5, one is 3.0.. but in the delete there's only one. the unit is also only responding to the 3.5 one - whatever category I put it in, thats where it is... any thought?
also - I installed the 1.1 update... and things seem ok except a little slow sometimes... some things are incredibly fast! I cant believe the difference, but tapping on the menu seems slightly slow, could be my imagination but I figure Id see if anyone else had a similar issue.
And - the speaker is MUCH louder than my deluxe was...

Thanks,

Pete

I have the same problem that when I go to the menu, some times it displays Please Wait for 1-2 seconds! I upgraded by backup too.

You can't use the backup module to go from one OS to another. This has been documented many times in these forums. The backup of OS 3.1 (Visor DLX) has preferences and settings saved from the 3.1 version. PLTM uses OS 3.5 and the settings are different in many cases. This is what is causing your problems and any future problems you run into.

You need to do a hard reset of the device and reinstall the applications the correct way. Also, after the Hard Reset you need to rename the Backup and Archive folders on your pc/mac so that the programs/preferences from the Backup folder don't get reinstalled on the first hotsync.

The only way to get the new PLTM to work right is to follow the above steps.

Are you sure neither of you had a Solo/Deluxe ONLY patch installed and then backed up to the module? The patch isn't designed for the Platnium, and so if you installed it when you restored, it might cause the problems you have. You have to remove it. I think handspring.com has the instuctions to remove it.

Actually, I think this varies. I used the backup mod to upgrade from a Solo, to a VDX, to a Plat, and then to an Edge, all without incident. I did make sure to do a warm reset and delete the patches. Somehow, I guess that with upgrading, your milage may vary. The good news is, no matter what, the backup module is rock steady.

Then that's a first I have heard of that. You were lucky, but everyone that I know or have conversed with in these forums who tried it didn't have success until the followed the steps I posted above. The biggest problem is with the "saved preferences" db. That is what causes the majority of issues.

OK, I've hard resetted, reinstalled, etc... No more double apps. Seems to be ok - hitting the home button repeatedly is not as peppy as I'd like...
I've noticed that after I installed apps with a hot sync that when I hit the home button it does a 'please wait' for 2 seconds or so.
Any thoughts?
Thanks again!

Pete

If the Please Wait comes up only after you sync a new file, that's normal. The system is creating the icon for the Home page. If it happens after you added a certain file and now does it whenever you go to the home page regardless of if you added a file, that's not right.

And the saga continues - I noticed the digitizer is off a few millimeters and cannot be calibrated. I tried resetting it and it went it a reset loop with the screen flashing the reset splash screen.. so its getting exchanged tomorrow...

Smile No Problems Here

When I upgraded from a VDX to my current Plat, I had no problem doing a straight Restore from the HS B/U Module. Had none of the problems listed here.

Same here...I also transferred all my apps and their associated databases via the 8MB Flash module.

I exchanged my platinum for another, restored from the backup module and the same thing happened - two graffiti db's in there. So i hard resetted, synced and installed my programs manually. All seems fine now. The platinum does act a little differently than my dlx... Thunderbird - it does 'please wait' only once.. so i guess thats normal, but my dlx never did it...
Anyway - thank you all for your responses.. Im still not sure if tapping the home icon was snappier on my dlx or not, but the platinum sure is faster!! The display seems much better and so does battery management ( I use NiMH)...

thanks again,
Pete
