Lightbulb

I have been looking forward to a springboard scanner with OCR for sucking text into the visor. I was reading at the Wizcom.com site and see that there seems to be a better solution already available.

They say that the wizcom scanner pen can beam to Palm OS via IR! This seems to me to be a better solution. All the advantages without using up the springboard slot. One could suck up text while connected to the internet with the Sixpack (if indeed it ever comes. I'm beginning to despair.) for instance. They say it costs about US$190.

Does anyone out there have one? Is it as fabulous as I imagine it to be? I may just have to buy one and find out.

I purchased the Wizcom handheld scanner pen from COMPUSA in Alexandria, Va. last weekend for $149.00, but have not had time to use it yet. I think you have to download files from their wizcom website to be able to scan information to the visor. I'm very new at this so if anyone sets it up to work with Visor please post about your experience. I think the price was good. When I went back to COMPUSA a couple days later they only had one left out of 6 last weekend when I purchased mine.

Yes, the v1.52 update is required to enable the beaming functions of the QuickLink Pen. It allows you to beam Notes and Addresses to and from the Visor.

I own and use the pen. Its fairly accurate with normal black text on a white background, it can have trouble with colored text or backgrounds. The box claims 97% accuracy and I would say if your scanning black text similar to something like arial on the white background you'll probably get that.

With the update they have you can easily beam to Memo Pad and Address Book. The beam is really fast since its only really transfering text, a few kb.

I e-mailed the head of Quicklink's American operations and she was very helpfull distinguishing between the two. The Quicklink Pen is a totally stand alone device, it doesn't require anything else and handles documents in its own way.

The Springboard module goes more the approach as data entry, as I understand it will be able to enter text into ANY application just like Graffiti or an external keyboard. This way you're not limited to just Memo Pad and Address book.

Personally, I like the stand alone more than a module simply because I assume the module will attach the pen using some sort of cable which I'm not very fond of.

For those waiting for the Springboard, the woman I spoke with said that it would be available this Fall.

I own pen but must download newest version of software. The visor is my first PDA so I'm not really up to speed on alot of things. Would you explain how you beam scanned text from the pen to the Memo Pad and Address Book? Thank you very much.

The QuickLink Pen Update v1.52 needs to be installed first. This updates both the Pen with the beaming feature. WizCom also has some beaming instructions posted online.

To beam from the Pen to the Visor, make sure Beam Receive is ON (goto Prefs, General). Then select the Note or Address record you want to beam. On the Pen menu, select Send, point the Pen's IR port at the Visor's, and the item will be beamed.

I also posted here

but just wanted to ask what people thought of having it as a pen v. a module? I like the idea of not eating up a port, but at the same time if the module can go into any app not just one or two maybe it's worth waiting until the fall.

Again, I reiterate, this would be great as a stand alone module
