Question

Sorry if I'm covering old ground here, but I'm having problems. Here's what I've done so far, and it hasn't helped a bit:

- USB *is* enabled in BIOS

- Plug n Play *is* enabled in BIOS

- Confirmed USB driver stats in System Properties, and both are operating correctly

- Have Local USB checked of in HotSync Manager (system tray)

- Have done several soft resets on my Visor

And I continue to get the following error messages:

HotSync Error:
An application failed to respond to a
HotSync notification. Please check the Palm Desktop for details. (8009)

HotSync Manager (PopUp Script)
An application on the PC failed to respond to a confirmation query. This application may need to be restarted.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else? I did forward this message to HS Tech Support, but I haven't heard squat...

Hmmm.... Notifications and Confirmations are messages that are sent by the HotSync Manager application to some other desktop applications via special Notification DLLs that are installed by some HotSync Conduits. For example, if you're using the Palm Desktop, when a HotSync session begins, HotSync Manager calls the Palm Conduits' Notification DLL (among others) to notify it that a sync is about to happen, etc. The Notification DLL checks if the Palm Desktop is running, and if it is, sends it a special message, causing Palm Desktop to close the files belonging to the currently synchronizing user. This allows the conduits to read/write to those same files during the HotSync session. At the end of HotSync, HotSync Manager calls the Notificaiton DDL(s) again, so they can notify their desktop PIM application(s) that it's OK to resume what they were doing before (or something like that).

So, your problem sounds like one of these Notification DLLs is failing. Have you installed the Palm Desktop which came with your Visor over another version of Palm Desktop, or was this a "virgin" installation? Also, have you installed any additional conduits besides the standard ones that came with your Handspring Installation CD? If you set up email synchronization, did you set it up for Outlook or the default MAPI/Lotus Notes email sync?

The way to tell which synchronization conduits you have installed is to right-click on the HotSync icon in the system icon tray (lower right of your PC's display), and click on "Custom...". This pops up a dialog with all the conduits listed. You can try to eliminate the failing Conduit by changing settings (from this dialog) to "Do Nothing" for one conduit at a time (make sure you also check "Set As Default") and trying to HotSync again. Hopefully, there is just one that causes this failure. Once you find it, you can re-enable all the other onse (be sure to check "Set As Default" when you re-enalbe, or the re-enabled settings won't stick). Please share your results. Good luck!

Best regards

Thumbs up

thanks for responding, madrussian. with your advice, and a link that i found through yahoo!, i was able to fix the problem.

it was a registry error - after i followed the advice outlined by Scott Leighton at his website, i was able to sync without a hitch!

i highly recommend this site for anyone having the same problems:
