Does anyone know if the 14.4 number is true?
No it's not. The maximum speed for the GSM VisorPhone is 9600 baud.
The 56k speed is for the new upgrade to GSM call GPRS. BUT the VisorPhone is not GPRS compatible. Even if it was, the 56k speed is just theoretical at this time for two main reasons:
1) There are NO active - and generally available - GPRS enabled systems out there. Yes there are one or two beta test areas, but they are small and limited only to the beta testers.
2) The only way any GPRS cellphone is going to go faster than about 19.2kbaud is if the GSM service providers replace their equipment at each cell site. It will happen, but not very soon, nor at a very fast pace. This is because even though the GPRS extention is just a protocol upgrade, the cell sites cannot transmit in more than two time slots out of the six without an equipment upgrade. So you get 2x 9600 baud instead of the theoretical maximum of 6x 9600 baud - 57.6k baud.
