Question

My office computer is aged. No USB port; runs Windows 95. Do I need to buy a serial cradle or does that come with my Visor Deluxe (assuming that ever comes)? I'm sure I should be able to figure this out from the Handspring site, but I can't.

Thanks for any insight.

The Visor doesn't come w/ a serial cradle. It's available for $20 bucks or so, but is currently backordered.

The answer to your question is, yes, you will have to buy a serial cradle for use with Win95.

Syncs can be done by infra-red but unfortunately that's probably not an option for your "aged" PC either.

OK, next question. Is Handspring's serial cradle the only one that will work or is it possible to acquire a serial cradle elsewhere and use it?

Again, thanks for the guidance.

right now, just HS supplies the cradles. That will change I am sure, but not yet.

Hi Lef:

I've been looking into this exact problem. It appears that although Win 95b CAN handle USB the particular implementation of the Visor software cannot (In Win95). USB is not (appears that it will not be) implemented in Windows NT. Currently, the only Windows OS that can support USB in the way Visor needs it would be Windows 98. However, a serial cradle would work just fine on your system. There is some confusion as to whether or not the serial cradles are back ordered. I've read post of people who received their Visor with the note that the serial cradle is backordered and then received the cradle the next day.

In any case, it appears that the solution to your (and my) problem is a serial cable.

Question

Has anyone tried a USB/Serial adapter. CompUSA says they have one. Any thoughts before I give it a try?

I can definately tell you that the graphite serial cradles are backordered. It appears that the ice serial cradles are not backordered. The funny thing is there are people who got graphite visor, and who can't sync. Then there are people who ordered colored visors and have received a backorder notice on their visor, but they have an ice serial cradle. Is it just me or would it have made more sense to send the serial cradles (even though they are ice) to someone who could use it?
