OK. So I have seen the Handspring modem, Thinmodem, Thinmodem+, and SpringPort Port modem and now I want to know what everybody else thinks of them so I know which one to buy. So, what do you think? I will be checking this thread often for your opinons. Thanks!

For best value I'd have to say the ThinModem+ (I'll be buying mine sometime next month). If you're worried about cost/battery life then the Xircom is the way to go. The original ThinModem isn't really a deal anymore, $30 more gets you 8mb of memory! The Handspring modem is the oldest & slowest, offering the least amount of features...

I concur with Matt. I'd go with the Thinmodem +, as the best value for the $ - a 56k modem plus 8mb flash. I'm toying with buying one myself, even though I have the Springport and a Minstrel S.

The one exception is if you plan to use the modem a lot. I don't know what the Thinmodem +'s power consumption is, but it works off your internal battery. The Springport has its own battery pack, so it won't drain your Visor's battery as fast.

I can't see any reason to get the Handspring modem. It's the biggest, and the slowest out there.

Digital Lines?

Thanks for the comments? Only one thing more, can I use the thinmodem+ with digital lines? I should have mentioned that digital support is a necessity for me. I could survive if I am warned about digital lines before I connect, but without full support or a warning, that module is useless to me.

To buy, or not to buy?

So, so far I have had nothing but positive comments twords the thinmodem+. However, I am still unclear as to support for digital lines. "akur" pointed me to

but the posts there were not positive answers.
Does anybody know for a fact that the thinmodem or thinmodem+ will notify you if it is pluged into a digital line? I don't want to buy this module only to have it explode in my springboard slot.

According to info on CardAccess' site, the Thinmodem does not support digital phone lines. Here is the URL for a PDF file that is a copy of the Quickstart instructions that come with the modem.

I am assuming that the Thinmodem + is the same but cannot be certain. UPS should be delivering mine tomorrow. I'll check the instructions and let you know if nobody else has found the answer.

Instructions that came w/ my thinmodem+ say that I may damage my modem if I connect it to a digital line.

I'm not going to try to confirm this.

Modem's way qool, however. If you use it for long periods of time, have spare batteries(s) available.

I don't know about the Thinmodem+, but the SpringPort can check if a line is digital before you fire it up.

Are you sure "VTL", are you quite sure? If this is so, I will find myself owning a SpringPort rather than a Thinmodem+. However, if anybody can conferm that the thinmodem+ will warn you of a digital connection, I will be getting that. Thank everybody!

What I meant to say was that the instructions that came w/ my thinmodem+ said I would damage my modem if I plugged it in to a digital line, and that I was not going to plug my modem into a digital line in order to break the modem and confirm that the instructions were correct.

I suspect they are correct.

Need digital? Don't get a thinmodem+

MultiMail vs. OneTouch?

I noticed that CardAccess has moved from shipping MultiMail (demo version) with the ThinModem to shipping OneTouch with the ThinModem+.

Any opinions on the differences between the two e-mail packages? I've glanced at MultiMail and was pretty impressed -- particularly that it had IMAP support. Anyone know whether OneTouch has the same?

xircom's spec page for their springport modem indicates that the modem's digitalshield protects it from digital phone lines.

mark's review of the modem also included this information, "the modem driver will detect and warn about a digital line connection (fatal to most modems) with both a visual message and three warning beeps."

if you do decide to purchase the springport modem, don't forget about the $30 mfg rebate.

There is some contraption you can buy which will allow you to utilize digital lines with analog modems. However, they tend to cost as much as a modem--around 100 bucks.

I've seen them in Fry's so they probably sell them on the internet on various computer sites.

tuesday or so. Let's hope it doesn't get Six-Pak-itis.

I'd recomend against the original thinmodem and the springport because I don't think that they have much value. and i'd decide between the HS modem and the TM+ bassed on your budget.

For the $70 (With rebates) the original ThinModem now sells for it is a good value. The Springport has some advantage because of the digital line detector & external batteries (With option of using rechargeable StarTAC). I really see Handspring, since its still sells for about $90-$100, as the least value!

I got my ThinModem+ last Wed. and have been happy with it. The 8mb is the real plus, and the modem is an extra benefit for when I go on trips. If you're already close to maxing your memory then you might as well get the + since those extra browsers and such can add up. I didn't like OneTouch though, and replaced that with Eudora.

After much carefull thought, I think I will be the proud owner of a SpringPort modem shortly. Although I would reeeaaallllyyyy like to get the Thinmodem+ (for the extra RAM), I simply must have digital support. No way around it. The SpringPort's digital shield looks like it can allow the modem to use a digital line some of the time, or at least warn the user that it is on a digital line. Also when you include the $30 mail-in rebate, the price is a soft ~$120. Thanks for all the helpfull comments you guys have posted.
