can i backup and restore to a CF card?

I have a webcomic. You should read it, or I may do something rash. Drive-by Loitering is updated every monday, wednesday and friday.

Yes you can - sort of....

I have one of the original Matchbook drives with no flash memory - the same technical situation you are in.

I do full back-ups and restores using bbVFS-free without a problem once I get the drivers on board the Visor. I also have a DataQuake and Thinmodem+ Springboards which do have flash memory available. I just make sure that I have copies of the drivers on those modules so that in the event of a hard reset I can copy them over to RAM, use the FAfilemover software to copy the bbVFS software over and do the restore.

It will if you have an OS 3.5 Visor. BBVFS is known to have compatibility problems with OS 3.1. You may also want to check out CardBackup. It offers a free version and has been specifically designed to be compatible with the FlashAdapter software.
