-- 16 grays on a VDx. why is this?? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=13719)
hiya i have app called gray paint v2 and it definately allows me to "paint" in 16 shades of gray. does anyone have an answer for this? and does anyone know of a hack to enable this all the time?? if so would be great in conjunction with afterburner!! V Platinum at VDx prices?!?!?! (well almost?)
jon
Ohh- greypaint 2 is out? hoooray. No, there is no way to enable this all the time. If you get a program called 'toggle', you can have the system be in 4 gray mode all the time, but thats' the most os3.1 will handle. And no, it doesn allow you to paint in grayscale mode on programs that normlly require OS3.5 for that(such as tealpaint). In fact, for most drawing apps, it causes crashes. Really, the only thing toggle does is allow you to see 4 gray bitmap rescources in full greyscale(such as grayscale Icons in the launcher menu, or programs that don't already tell the system to go into grayscale mode.)
So, no platinum at VDX prices.

Any app can work in sixteen grayscale mode on a VDX if the app programs the mode directly. This is not a horrible amount of work, but still significant.
The issue is that while the hardware does absolutely support the capability, the Palm OS 3.1 does not. This means that each app that wants to use 16 grayscale mode has to have custom code to set the mode, and to read and write to the display. Additionally, if the app needs to display text, display bitmaps, draw lines rectangles, circles, fills, etc., all of the code has to be within the app itself. This causes the app to be significantly larger than a comparable app for the newer OS versions. Most programmers just aren't willing to deal with the headaches.

K. Cannon - way off topic but... I love your avatar. SC has one of the coolest flags. It reminds me of The South.
