I'm a student at a University in Canada. I thought some of you might be interested to see a certain large software/hardware giant's latest ploy to take over another market. I received the following by email (I'm in electrical engineering):

Come see the Pocket PC in action, win free software, and get the chance to enter the Microsoft Pocket PC Programming Competition! Also, sign-up on <some website> (it's free) to keep up to date on the latest Microsoft events on campus.

In this tech talk, I'll show you the capabilities of the Pocket PC and demonstrate how it's much more than just a PDA. Beyond its basic functionality, I'll also be giving a quick intro to eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0 (eVT) - the development environment used to create applications for the Pocket PC. You'll be able to see just how easy it is to start programming for the Pocket PC, even if you don't have a Pocket PC to test on.

The Microsoft Pocket PC Programming Competition will also be launched at this presentation! The prizes to be won are as follows:

- The top team at <some univeristy> wins a Pocket PC for each of its group members and moves on to the North America-wide competition.

- The 1st place team at the North America-wide competition will win USD$25000.

- The 2nd place team at the North America-wide competition will win USD$20000.

$25,000! Crap, I'm in the wrong business, should have become a programmer.

Well, things do seem to be looking up for Microsoft. Apparent Pocket PCs are making big inroads in the enterprise, and stealing market share from Palm. And the iPAQ is the hottest PDA in retail. I'm still waiting for my Palm apps to get ported, which seems to be coming fairly soon. HanDBase for Pocket PC is in the works, as well as Pocket Quicken, Vindigo, and even DateBK4 is on the horizon.

I'm glad Pocket PC is doing well. The more market share Microsoft grabs, the more pressure will be on Palm to actually start innovating for a change. My favorite quote comes from Bob Lewis's article in InfoWorld: "In a bizarre twist, Microsoft's only hope for major growth is the PocketPC, thanks to Palm, which has been so complacent that no platform innovation is even envisioned."
