-- Can anyone recommend a PalmPilot book? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=222)

Question

I'm new to the Palm platform and I need to read up before I get my Visor. Not just for personal reasons, there's a business application I'm going to be researching for my boss. Can anyone recommend good books on PalmPilot? I've already reserved a copy of "PalmPilot for Dummies" at the library. The LA Public Library does NOT have a copy of the O'Reilly guide (the author's name is Pogue) which is another one I've heard good things about...it costs $30, I won't buy it without a recommendation!

Thanks in advance.

Thumbs up

I bought the Palm Pilot, second edition. which is written by David Pogue, forwarded by
Mr. Hawkins himself. I really enjoy reading the book, alot of great information and has "over 3,100 programs" for the palm enclosed on a CD. Its worth the $29.95. Recommend!

I agree Pogue's 2nd Edition is very good.

Actually, perhaps you could tell us what kind of application you're looking for... We might now right off hand which program is best, or which programs are preferred...

You're welcome to e-mail me directly, for what help I can offer...

Personally, I'm interested in all kinds of applications - which is why I was interested in a general book. The recommendations seem to be running in favor of the Pogue book. Probably a good call anyway as I know O'Reilly's stature in computer user guide publishing.

Professionally, I'm interested in publishing the book I edit on the Palm platform. Memory is a concern. The book is a business-to-business directory with over 12,000 listings. If delivered in document format (Aportis?), it might just fit. If delivered as a database (JFile?) it most likely wouldn't. Yet to have searchability functions, wouldn't you need to go the database route? I suspect a Springboard may be the answer...but many of our user base already have Palms, I wouldn't want to alienate them by delivering something they can't use.

Has anyone used reference works (such as a dictionary) on Palm platform? How useful?

Go with iSilo for the book.

David Pogue's book is definitely the best I've seen with lots of useful shareware/freeware on the accompanying CD-ROM.

Be sure to get the 2nd edition though (clearly marked on the cover). Some bookstores are still stocking the 1st ed.

Question

I am a WinCE user...soon to be a Visor user.... It looks like David Pogue's 2nd ed.
is the handsdown favorite.....Would this still be a good read for someone that is a first time
Visor user ?
