-- Anyone gotten PPP to work with Visor? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2210)
Has anyone established a PPP connection through the serial cradle with their Visor? Every time I try (using instructions for Palm machines), I get Error: PPP timeout (0x1231).
Now, I know the serial connection is working, because I can use the serial mode on ptelnet to talk to minicom on linux (the terminal emulator). I've tried making a PPP connection under both linux (with pppd) and Win98 (with Mocha W32 PPP) with no success -- same result.
If it makes a difference, I've invoked pppd on linux with a variety of different options, the latest of which is:
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/pilot 19200 local persist passive lock proxyarp debug 10.0.0.1:10.0.0
------------------
Gabe
Try:
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/pilot 115200 192.168.1.3:192.168.1.10 local ms-dns \
192.168.100.1 persist passive noauth debug nodeflate nobsdcomp noccp nopcomp
That is the line I used to link using IRLink
to the laptop.
I have not tried it with the serial cradle yet...
Ive got the same problem. My advice to see whats going on:
Invoke a terminal program on the Linux box and connect it to the serial port you want to use your Visor on. Then try to establish a PPP connection on the Visor. On my device nothing happens. I tried it with every port speed possible but nothing.
Ive already contacted Handspring with this matter but even after three calls to their hotline (from germany I might add) they were not able to help me in any way. A couple of days ago I wrote an eMail to their support account but havent got an answer yet.
My advice: annoy them with questions. Dont mention that you use Linux. When I told them I want to connect to my Linux box they said they wouldnt support Linux. (In fact I myself work as a call center agent in a modem hotline and I would tell my customers the same thing...) But the issue is: it doesnt matter whether you have Windows NT (what they suggested to use) or Linux because of two reasons:
First, Visor uses the PPP protocol which is a well defined standard and should work even with a Sinclair Spectrum if one implemented a PPP server for this "machine".
Second, there is no serial port activity on the Visor so you can even connect it to a freezer and it wont make any difference.
If you have any clue whats going on, please contact me by my eMail address:

Thanks in advance.
Bye!
