-- Visor With Mac (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15716)
I'm giving my old VDX to my parents. They have a Mac, and I've only used Visor with Windows. Is there anything I need to know about? They are totally PDA-clueless (though computer-literate), and I really want this to go well for them.
Thanks in advance!
Hi Juli,
I'm a Prism owner and have been on Mac all of my life.
Do you know what operating system they are on? There have been some issues with support on OSX, and I'm not sure how the Visor platform does on 'older' versions (prior to 8.0).
Probably the biggest issue is that they'll have problems synching with E-Mail programs. I know that there is some stuff out therefor E-Mail, but it's so much easier on the Pc and with Intellisynch.
You'll also find that some programs, such as the recent upgrades of Avant Go, come out first for the Pc and then later for the Mac.
All in all I've found the synching process easier with the Mac (I do own a Toshiba PC) and more intuitive.
Other than that, just make sure that any programs that they have (especially those that use desktop apps as support (docs to go)) have the Mac version of the software installed.
good luck! -- dave
Macs and Visors work great with each other. The only advice I have is that if they are going to by HotSyncing large chunks of data, say AvantGo, or are using BackupBuddy for backups, to increase the memory alocation for the Conduit Manager to 12,288K. This will avoid sync problems that can sometimes occur when large amounts of data have to be tranfered to or from the Visor.
Nice and easy...
Juli,
The Mac version of the Palm Desktop is included on the Handspring CD that came with your original Visor. Just insert the CD and double-click on the "Palm Desktop Installer" and follow the instructions. It's really easy to install and the Desktop works the same for both Windows and the Mac.
The user manual is included as well in pdf format (they'll need to have Acrobat Reader installed.) There are some basic instructions on how to use a Visor that your parents may like to know. It's a good intro to using PDAs.
Hope they enjoy using their "new" Visor...
