Yeah, and one would think that someone with the willingness to go that extra step to have a more rounded viewpoint wouldn't be done in by a simple comment in a review. Which is it? Is a comment in an award review going to irreparably harm someone's opinion of a product, or are they going to find out real user's experience on the discussion boards? Can't have it both ways.

Actually, I wonder given some of the responses whether or not real attention is being paid to what I've said. It seems to me that some seem to be misinterpreting what I'm saying. Case-in-point...

I don't know about you, but with me, it might lead to better communication. If I'm talking with a non-native speaker, I'm going to be careful about avoiding shadings of language that I might use with a native speaker. My normal use of language and meaning is a bit subtle at times, and meanings can come across as ambiguous or unclear (even with native English speakers from other regions). If I know what I'm dealing with, I might sacrifice a more precise, yet subtle meaning for something more obvious and concrete.

Those who read the boards are not going to be mislead by the "owns..." comment. However, those who do not might be. The sort of person who only reads the reviews, or maybe even only the VC Awards, might be. How about the boyfriend who wants to buy his girlfriend a Springboard module and happens on the VC Awards, reads the Springboard of the year award, and comes to the conclusion that there is no other real choice for a storage module, goes to PalmGear, and buys a MemPlug. (Perhaps even if the CF module his girlfriend has been hinting about was the FlashPlus?)

That's why the press must be held to a higher standard for factual reporting and reviewing than the average joe like us here in the forums. They have a stronger influence and a bigger impact on the general public than we do. (Just as police officers must be held more accountable for their actions because of their greater authority.)

You and I know that there are other alternatives -- certainly anyone who has even glanced at the discussion boards lately knows that -- but the concern is for those who aren't the powerusers, those who simply skim the news and reviews.

Again, most of the folks here have not expressed concern about the choice of the MemPlug (even if, as I do, they disagree with it) but only about the misleading comment about "own"ing the market.

Keep in mind that this arose out of a statement where someone said they were glad for this discussion since it would highlight that the Memplug wasn't the only option. I said that it wouldn't since someone who wasn't paying attention to the discussion boards well enough to know that there _were_ other options probably wouldn't stumble upon this thread.

Really irrelevant to anything I said, but incidentally, the FlashPlus is on the same page on PalmGear as the MemPlugCF.

Ahem...this is not a 'press' site really. It is an _enthusiast_ site. Other than the advance review copies they get sometimes, the staff at VC are roughly at the same level as you or me, AFAIC. They're users. All I expect them to do is be honest with their impressions, the same way that I'd expect people on discussion boards to be. Plus maybe I'm an ageist for cutting Michael a little slack because of his age and expected exuberance over something that he thinks is cool.

Yeah, and I still think their concern is much ado about relatively nothing.
