I received several people asking me by email the following or very similar questions so I thought I might put it here since other people may have the same question:

Ahh... I used spit...
and my finger tip and then a soft cloth (hankerchief).
I haven't had any problem post removal. I did go very slowly for fear of just the reasons you cited and I would say that is wise. When it doubt, proceed, slowly...
