-- Ericsson DI27 Infra-red (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=3153)
hi
does anyone know if it is possiable to use the Ericsson DI27 Infra-red +t18 mobile phone, to access my e-mails and surf the net?
many thanx
david
Yes, it's quite possible, but there are a few things you need to make it so.
First you need to get 'IRLink' $20 from www.iscomplete.com
Second you need 'IRenhance' free from www.palm.com
Third you need an email client such as 'MultiMail' or 'ProxiMail'
Fourth you need a web browser such as 'EudoraWeb' or 'ProxiWeb'
Unzip IRLink, read the enclosed documentation, and install the two .prc files
Unzip IRenhance and install ONLY SerIRCommLib.prc (discard the other three files which will crash your Visor big-time if installed, needing a hard reset to recover)
The main stumbling block I had was finding out the correct modem settings, which I finally got from iscomplete (thanks John).I'm using a Motorola Timeport,so they may be different for your DI27. For the record,my settings are as follows...
Modem:Custom
Speed:57,600 bps (not 9,600 as I assumed)
Speaker:Low
Flow Ctl:Automatic
Country:Other (important apparently)
String :None
I think you'll find further Ericsson info in the IRLink documentation.
One more point: make sure beam receive in General Preferences is set to OFF.
There is a freeware alternative to IRLink called BeamSync (read Leafy's post entitled 'Don't waste money on IRLink' for the link). Personally I couldn't make it work, but it may well have been due to incorrect modem settings. I'll try it again in due course.
I'm using MultiMail Discovery for email at present,a basic free trial version of MultiMail Pro, which I'll probably upgrade to soon for its improved features and its ability to handle attatchments. As far as surfing is concerned,I feel that browsing at 9,600 bps (max UK GSM data speed) must be a very slow and painful process. I use AvantGo which works quite well as an offline browser (you can also use it online, though I haven't tried)
Well I hope this helps you to get it together quicker than it took me (about two weeks!)
Good luck,
Ben

Internet acces, Di27
I tried to access the Internet via Di27 and GA628 (both Ericsson) with Visor deluxe. It works fine with BeamSync (see above). You have to use two files from 'IRenhance':
- SerialIrPnl.prc (named SerialPanel.prc in BeamSync's Readme documentation)
- SerIrCommLib.prc
and also
- bsync-e.prc (BeamSync package for English version)
I downloaded/installed 3 files to Visor as usual in one step.
My modem settings are as follows:
Modem:Standard
Speed:57,600 bps
Speaker:Low
Flow Ctl:Automatic
Country:Other
String :AT&FX4
Although the transfer rate between your modem and modem of the ISP (Internet provider) is 'only' 9600 bps, you can only set the trasfer rate between your handheld and mobile phone (57,600 bps as above). So this is not the bandwidth from you to the ISP's access point (!).
Be careful to select proper TCP/IP settings (Properties | Network | Details...), such as Connection type, Query DNS and IP address.
can anyone tell me where I can find one of these Di27's?
I'd also like to know how big it is, if it sucks batteries and such. I found it on the ericsson webpage, but there was no picture, and it's about a 100 dollars US. Considering fido, the plan im on is selling the T18z for about 17 dollars US, i'd be thrilled to know if there was a cheaper way...
so yeah, a picture and a short review would be very nice.

Look at http://www.ericsson.com (under 'search' enter Di27) and your cellular phone dealer.
