I bought one of the early Vdx's, so I have definitely gotten my $$ worth, but I'm hoping I can eke out some more use before buying a new PDA.

What's happening is simple: some of my buttons don't work anymore, including the ON/OFF button. I opened it to see how things work, and it seems there is a board that includes some of the battery contacts. On this board there a bunch of bubbles that get squeezed by the buttons - I assume these cause some kind of contact to be made.

I've emailed HS to see if I can get this repaired...I'll post an update when I get a reply.

In the meantime...anyone else seeing this problem or know of a fix?

My temporary workaround is to turn the Vdx on with the ToDo or Memo button and navigate around with the stylus - then let it turn itself off by going to sleep.

The same is happening to mine. I bought my original VDX in September, 2000. Handspring sent me a replacement after problems with that one (which they were very good about, btw). I've had the replacement less than six months.

My power button works about half the time. My memo button now takes 3 pushes sometimes and the other buttons are starting to show similar symptoms. I don't bash them, I don't play games that require them (I'm stuck on klondike and backgammon, neither of which require the buttons).

Is this something that's covered under warranty or just "wear and tear"? I'm starting to get frustrated.

Seems that this is covered by the $85 replacement - same as a cracked screen. Works for me, I guess - with labor, fixing it probably isn't worthwhile.

What do you think?

I'm guessing that if you are still under warranty they'll replace it.
