-- Magellan GPS outside Visor? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15298)
Two questions about the Magellan GPS Companion:
1. Can I turn it on and carry it around outside of my Visor and have it collect stats (distance, avg speed, etc) that I can then view when I put it back in the Visor?
2. I've read that the GPS will power down after 2 minutes...does this mean that I have to have my Visor powered on with a GPS app up to keep the GPS working? I'd like to conserve the battery on my Visor and power it off but still collect stats, plot course, etc. I know you can do this with the SoundsGood MP3 SB...but doubt it works the same with the Magellan.
Does anyone w/ a Magellan GPS Companion know?
FYI...CompUSA is offering a $30 rebate on this product, which brings the price down to $120. But as someone else discovered the hard way...only w/ purchase of a Visor.
Visor needs to stay on
In response to your questions, the GPS Companion only works when plugged in to the visor and yes, your visor needs to be on and running a GPS app for it to remain functional. I have both GPS companion and a Magellan M330, The companion is more convenient and has more detailed maps than the M330 base maps, but is not near as sensitive or accurate. If you are going to use the GPS Companion with a visor for any significant amount of time plan on using rechargeable batteries or spending alot on duracells.

Magellan
I have the Magellan springboard module and will try to answer your questions.
1. The module will not work when disconnected from the Visor.
2. It been a few weeks since I last used it, but I seem to remember that is maintained a lock even with the Visor turned off. I will check it again this morning and post another message.
Magellan
I check the operation of the Magellan with the Visor and the unit does not work with the Visor turned off. However, once it has acquired a fix and the Visor is turned off, it will obtain a new fix very rapidly.

Thanks for taking the time to investigate this for me. I think I'm going to get one despite it being 100% tied to the Visor to function. Hope no one calls my Visorphone while I'm trying to figure out where I am with the GPS Companion!
just dont get a geode gps module.
